Adam Elliot

Oscar-winning animator

By the time Australian film maker, animator, director and writer Adam Elliot shot to international fame by winning the Oscar for his short animated claymation film Harvey Krumpet in 2003, he was already a recognised and acclaimed filmmaker here in Australia with 3 AFIs under his belt.

Elliot made Hollywood history when he thanked his boyfriend Dan in his acceptance speech infront of over a billion television viewers worldwide. It was the first time in the 76 year history that such a thing had ever been done.

Adam studied animation at the Victorian College of the arts. His first film, ‘Uncle’ went on to win an AFI, as did the subsequent films in the trilogy, ‘Cousin’ and ‘Brother’. He is one of the most highly acclaimed independent filmmakers in the world and his five films have been seen and loved by millions. He has since been awarded a slew of local and international awards.

Elliot also notoriously rejected international offers from renowned animation studios after his Oscar win, instead choosing to continue creating and working in Australia, telling Australian stories with full creative control. Earlier this year he released ‘Mary And Max’, his first feature length claymation film that has received critical acclaim, and is one of the biggest Aussie films this year. It featured a stellar cast including Toni Collette, Eric Bana, Geoffrey Rush, Barry Humphries and Philip Seymour Hoffman.

Adam Elliot continues to be involved with many sectors of the community, in activities that range from mentor programs, public and corporate speaking, to being an ambassador for charities, raising awareness about mental health and disability.

Elliot lives and works in the Melbourne suburb of Windsor, with his partner Dan, and gorgeous pug dogs Barry and Kevin. To relax, he loves nothing more than drawing in his underpants.
