Matthew Mitcham

Still making a splash

“Olympic gold medal winner and all-round-nice-guy - an inspiration for the younger generation!”

He's been on this list twice before and also got a spot on our '50 Things We Love About Gay Australia' list. It's no surprise - the last 12 months have been busy and victorious ones for Mitcham, again representing Australia in the sport he loves so much.

Last May he took home another golden medal, after scoring two perfect 10’s in the 10-metre event at the Canada Cup FINA Grand Prix diving competition in Montreal, then a month later he did it again - nabbing gold at the 10-metre platform of the Diving World Cup in China.

Then in October young British diver Tom Daley took our Aussie star on and won at the Commonwealth Games. The normally awe-provoking Mitcham accepted an impressive Silver medal but explained that he was not quite 'on form'. “I did not dive even close to my best today and if I had of it would have been really exciting,” he said.

“But I’ve gone from not having a Commonwealth Games medal to winning a medal in every event I’ve competed in …so I can’t be too disappointed.” Indeed.

Tom Daley better watch out - our favourite Speedo star is expected to be a strong contender at the London Olympics in 2012. Good luck Matt, we love you!
