Dr Wendell Rosevear

Medical Practitioner

“Wendell is unwavering in his support of the community and issues surrounding mental health. He has been a wealth of inspiration and support for me and my partner who have been though everything from a HIV-scare to other personal issues. Wendell is humble, always available and continually giving of himself. I hope we can give something back to him.”

Dr Wendell Rosevear works in Gay & Lesbian Health, having co-founded the Gladstone Road and Stonewall Medical Centres. He founded GLADS (Gay & Lesbian Alcohol & Drug recovery group) in 1991 and MARS (Men Affected by Rape & Sexual Abuse) in 1993. He has worked in prisons for many years, cares for people with HIV/AIDS and is active in suicide prevention.

Among his many awards and honours is the 1996 Brisbane Australia Day Citizen of the Year, a 2001 'Local Hero' award, and the Order of Australia Medal in 1998. His community spirit has earned him the nickname 'Nelson Wendella' among his colleagues.

Dr. Rosevear is active in addressing how our community relates to individuals who use drugs and alcohol and advocates nationally for understanding and drug law reform. He also lobbies for suicide prevention and against discrimination at all levels, and works with male and female victims perpetrators of sexual abuse. He’s cared for 117 perpetrators in assisting their recovery from being abusive.

"My personal life motto is 'to make Love infectious' and being part of SameSame25 just helps that... I hope you catch it," the good doctor says as he was told of his inclusion on this list.

"Most of our world’s problems are due to the lack of love. I work with many people who have not had love defined for them, in that they have suffered abuse, rejection or prejudice. I work in HIV/AIDS, Prisons, Drugs and Alcohol, Rape and Sexual-abuse plus LGBTI Health. As LGBTI people, as we come to accept ourselves we have a unique opportunity to accept each other, respect honesty and demonstrate the value of each individual separate to a world that pressures us to conform or perform to get accepted. Share it and enjoy it."
