A message from the Queen:
Hello my loyal subjects,
Your Melbourne Editor tells me there is so much happening in the gay scene in Melbourne on my birthday. That’s wonderful to hear. So please take a moment to reflect upon his suggestions of where you should be this weekend.
I’d love to be over there in “Melbourne” but Madonna is touring here, and then there’s the price of fuel being what it is… The corgies just don’t travel like they used to, plus I’m awfully busy with the British Intelligence, working on which annoying Royal I’m going to knock off next.
Anyway, Happy Birthday to me.
Thank you.
Signed, Your Majesty.
Market, I Knight The!
Out of all the queer clubs that told me that they would be in attendance at the 2am Protest, The Market was the only one that attended. And for that I think they actually deserve the title of ‘Queen Of Clubs’. Luckily, the Market, along with a number of Melbourne’s queer venues, got exemptions from the stupid 2am lockout laws that take effect this week. Wow, that alone is reason to celebrate.
So why not shimmy and shake it down at one of Melbourne’s best full time 24-7 gay clubs, The Market, this long weekend? There is something on every night of the weekend.
Friday features your awesome Grind DJs and hot male dancers.
Saturday stars UK DJ Paul Heron from 1am – 4am, as well regulars Queen Martine, Tony Svehla and KDJ.
Then on Sunday it really goes off with NY house diva Inaya Day doing a live performance from 1am, as well as killer DJs Miss Eleni, David Jago and Jimi Harrison.
Looks like the Market could easily be your one stop shop.
Men On Men Action Begins
An arts event in the party guide? Sure! Especially if its as fun as this exhibition opening! The Laird Hotel’s Men On Men Art Competition is now Victoria’s longest running Gay Art Prize. The competition showcases work of male artists across the range of arts practices of drawing, painting, photography and beyond, that have been created in the past 12 months, that explore the theme of men and masculinity.
The 2008 exhibition of entries begins this Queens Birthday Weekend from Saturday 7th June with an opening night party, where women will be welcome in the otherwise men only gay pub til 5pm. I really encourage the girls to get along to this great event and check out a great exhibition and a great pub.
The standard of the work is impressively high for an open entry exhibition, and with the help of Midsumma (Melbourne’s Gay and Lesbian Festival) the life of competition has been secured and taken to the next level. It is one of the more exciting, interesting and fun arts events on the calendar, and definitely worth getting to. I mean, how often can you check out some great art, get totally plastered at a gallery and pick up that meaningful one night stand, all in the same place?
The Laird Men On Men Art Exhibition runs till Sunday 22nd June. Winners will be announced in a special awards night on Saturday 21st June.
Vertical Challenge
Alison Bennett, better known as Alleykat on Same Same, is an incredible artistic talent. She opens her studio to the public for her brilliant exhibition Verticalism. The exhibition features the most amazing panoramas of famous gothic ceilings that she shot while in Europe, painstakingly stitched together. There’s something about Alison’s work that gives it a lyrical and poetic quality, that draws you in. They are not just pictures of ceilings, they are stories. They are the experience of being in that space. For such a simple idea, these works are incredibly powerful, revealing and very beautiful.
Verticalism opens on Friday 6th of June, from 6-8pm, at 130A Stewart st, Brunswick East.
If you can’t make the opening night, then the exhibition will be open on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays until the 28th June, from 1pm till 6pm. I strongly urge you to check out this work.
Stirred and Shaken
When it comes to hot girls parties it’s often a long time between drinks. Well, the drought is over ladies! Blonde On The Rocks, the lush salon for girls who like girls, is back this Friday 6th June from 9pm – 3am. The fun is all at the supercool Eurotrash Bar in Chinatown’s Corrs Lane in the city. Entry is $15 or $12 concession, and that includes a free glass of champers. Oh dear! I’m feeling tipsy already. But then again, that’s what long weekends are all about. And what better way to start your weekend than with getting boozed with your sexiest sisters?
Sircuit Break
With great DJs, an awesomely spunky pub atmosphere, free pool, men only cruise area and the best bar prices in town, you simply can’t go past Sircuit. Alternative guys, leather men and butch types will especially love this men only venue this weekend, as it hosts a butt spankingly good event for each night.
The fun starts with Thursdays Bootclub, which will feature a flogging competition, where the bloke who takes the most punishment, gets the $100 drink card prize. That hardly seems like punishment at all.
Friday features two male stippers up on the hoist from 10pm. Saturday sees DJ Industrial Edge take to the decks.
On Sunday, Sircuit opens it doors to the ladies and features its mixed event, Black Party #1 from 8pm, and a killer DJ line up of Papa Tom, Gavin Campbell and DJ Andy. The best news? It’s free entry folks!
From Monday it all gets racey in a good way, with the Butt Naked day dance party from 2 – 9pm. Sex Machine DJs Frisky and Peter Mac will make sure you’ll be dancing whether its horizontally or vertically.
Freak Show Royalty!
The Opium Den is a great atmospheric bar that has this slight twist of the ‘alternative’ and the ‘theatrical’. That’s probably why it’s two big nights, Fridays and Saturdays have this real queer, kookie and alternative edge.
It’s more than just the warped minds of the Friday Sideshow’s Twisted Sisters that make their shows so fun. These drags have talent, and intelligence, which actually makes their shows very entertaining in a very left of centre circus kind of way. The make up and costumes are spot on for the style of show, and so is their sense of humour, courtesy of the brilliant Anita Beer. Friday Sideshow is on at the Opium Den every Friday and features.
Opium Den’s new Allsorts event now features every Saturday, with live bands and sexy burlesque from 11:30pm, plus a host of quirky funky DJs.
I’m not promising a rose garden, but it’s still damn good. Sure, entry is $8 / $10, but then again you actually get something for your money, plus great drink specials like $5 Cosmos once you’re in. So it all balances out.
Mr Eagle Leather.
The Hunt For Mr. Melbourne Leather for this year’s Melbourne Leather Pride, goes one step further this long weekend, with Eagle leather looking for the sexy man that will be their representative in the big competition in September.
The Stingo Hotel and Eagle Leather team up to present Mr Eagle Leather on Saturday 7th June from 7pm. Aside from all the spunks that take to the stage in the competition, the night will also be a Eagle Leather’s 14th Birthday, celebrating a huge milestone for Melbourne’s most renowned gay leather and fetish store. Did I mention there will be a sausage sizzle? Oh those crazy leather boys and girls sure know how to entertain. Mr Eagle Leather will be a fundraiser for the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Victoria, so dig deep for a worthy cause.
Save the Queen!
Ok, lets call a spade a spade. The God Save The Queen day party is the party to go to this weekend. It’s got a great venue with three dance spaces and styles of music. Then there’s a huge talented DJ line up of no less than 13 DJs. There are so many DJs that they’ve even got them playing in the toilets! It’s the only big party around, amongst all the smaller niche events happening around town, but you won’t be ‘settling’ by any means – you’re in for a damn good time. And if that’s not enough for you, then the official after party is just across the road at Viper Room. All that for just $47 + Booking fee. You don’t have to be one of the royals to go to the best party this weekend.
God Save The Queen is on at Chasers Nightclub in Chapel Street, South Yarra, from 11am till 8pm on Sunday 8th June. Click here to buy tickets to this event right here on Same Same!
Bounce that Royal Booty
Loop is one of the coolest venues in Melbourne, and together with a killer DJ line up, including the awesome Stephen Alkins (aka Love Tattoo), Miss Eleni and the Queen herself, Queen Martine, Bounce is going to go through the roof. If you love your house music, then this is just the experience you’ve been looking for. These funksters sure know how to get a party going, and keep it going, with minimal cheese.
Bounce is at LOOP at 23 Meyers Place in the City, from 10pm till late. Tickets are just $30 presale from Hares & Hyenas, Bang, Out Video and Dungeon Warehouse.
The Queen Machine
You’d better get in early all you clubbing royalty and gay-listers! Love Machine is back with another massive long weekend night. Your DJs Frisky, Peter Mac and Mr Stoj are the unstoppable musical force at Love Machine pumping out the hits and bringing a touch of magic to your night. Love it or Loathe it, Love Machine continues to be a hot favourite each weekend, so you can bet it is going to be packed to the rafters with Queens this Sunday.
Interstate Lucky-Ducks
If you’re one of those lucky bitches who will be heading to Sydney town then you’ve got a whole lotta great options. At the top of the list is Australia’s biggest leather party Inquisition XVI – Pleasure Dome, and if leather isn’t quite your scene, then you’ve gotta make sure you’re at Get Together. Get Together joins two of Sydney’s coolest parties, Fag Tag and Bitch, into one big she-bang that includes a live performance by NY diva and hit factory, Inaya Day.
Check out our What’s On Guide, where you’ll get the full lowdown of what’s hot this long weekend.
