Long Weekend Fit For A Queen!

The long weekend is almost upon us and as usual, we’re spoilt for choice. So if you’re scratching your head and asking yourself ‘What do I wear?’ and ‘Where do I go?’ then don’t worry – Same Same’s here to give you the lowdown.

Things are pretty chilled around town on Friday night, but if you wanna jump straight into it and you’re not yet ‘Kylied out’ (yes, we did just invent that verb) then the Midnight Shift are putting on a Kylie Tribute show for one night only featuring Minnie Cooper, Decoda Secret, Tiffany and their sexy back up dancers Anthony and Ashley. Definitely worth checking out if you’re a fan! (And who isn’t? Come on, be honest.)

For lovers of leather Inquisition is the party of the season. This year it returns to its old stomping ground at The Dome, as well as The Forum at Entertainment Quarter. Now in its sixteenth year, Inquisition is Sydney’s third oldest gay dance party, behind Mardi Gras and Sleaze Ball – a very impressive achievement indeed.

The dresscode is fetish, the theme is Pleasuredome and the DJ line up features some of the best talent Australia has to offer, including Shanobear, Scott Pullen, Ben Drayton, Fiesty, Mandy Rollins, Mark Alsop and Shigeki, who’s flown back to Sydney from Singapore especially. Gotta love that. Tickets are still available to this one, but they’re selling fast, so don’t delay or you may be left out in the cold, and we wouldn’t want that now, would we?

Across town at Oxford Arts Factory, the girls and boys at Get Together will be doing just that. This party, now in its second year, not only combines the best bits from Bitch and Fag Tag in one happening room, it also disproves the myth that gay boys and girls don’t play well together. The line up is huge and includes Alex Taylor, Kate Monroe, Sista P, Chip, Jason Barry, Renae Stanton, Neroli, Beatrix and GI Jode. There’s live entertainment from American diva Inaya Day, Kyla Sexton and Lotus Position. They’re also shoving Courtney Act in a box – we can’t say too much, but there’s nudity involved and it promises to be artistic. Loves it. You will too.

Action At The Arthouse is back again this Queens Birthday Long Weekend. This year Action kicks off Sunday afternoon at the civilised hour of 5pm. Who would have thought that we’d ever use the words ‘Action’ and ‘civilised’ in the same sentence? The headliner is superstar DJ Steve Lawler – he’ll be playing his first ever gay gig alongside John Devecchis, Andrew Padula, Scott Pullen and Carlos Zarate.

Once Action wraps up the crowd will no doubt head off to either Indulgence or DTPM. Indulgence, as always, is strictly denim or leather – no room for spectators here. The party starts at 10pm at the Midnight Shift and Shigeki, Chip and Beefy Boy will be playing all night long.

DTPM is back at Tank and is shaking things up a bit, introducing a few new DJs into the fold. In the main room, Chris Kate and Tony Venuto, two rising stars of the house scene, join resident Alan Thomspon and stalwart Eddie Coulter on the decks. In Room 2, DTPM virgin Double Nolan from Gay Bash is taking up the challenge with Mark Murphy and Goodfella.

Lovers of trance, don’t despair! Ruby’s back with lashings of ‘hands in the air’ goodness at Shine, at the Midnight Shift from midday on Sunday. Other DJs include Joal Bowman and JoJo.

And Homesexual returns to Home this Sunday from 11pm. This time the theme is High School Reunion, so break out the pigtails and tunic, the clipboard and drink bottle, the high socks, shirt and tie! The line up includes Jayson Forbes, Shigeki, Chip, Alex Taylor, Sista P, Justin Scott and Tim Graham. For the first time they’ll be holding their own recovery party up on the roof. That kicks off Monday morning from 11am with DJs Dan Murphy and Kitty Glitter. Lets hope it’s nice weather!

Now, as if all that wasn’t enough – where will you recover?

Well, if you thought you’d seen it all downstairs at the Midnight Shift, think again. Sunday morning from 8am sees the venue turn into The Barracks. It’s dark, it’s sleazy and it’s the official Inquisition recovery space. DJs Rado and Gavyn Vincze will keep you on your feet. And make sure you keep an eye out for the buzz cutter and his barber chair – he’ll be happy to trim your hairy bits throughout the morning.

Now when it comes to recoveries you really can’t go past Phoenix Rising. They’re open right through the weekend – Saturday from 6.30am to 1pm with DJs Mark Alsop and Gavyn Vincze, Sunday from 5am to 3pm with Johan Khoury, Keenan Whittle, Chip and Luke Leal and Monday from 6.30am to 3pm with Rado, Mark Alsop and Dan Murphy.

If you were at the opening night of Manacle’s new home at The Clarence Hotel you’ll no doubt remember one thing – the place was jam packed! Manacle will be opening their doors after Inquisition from 10am for those of you who want to recover in their sexy new space. With Beefy Boy, Rado and Mark Alsop manning the decks, you’ll be in safe hands. They’ll also be hosting a recovery on Monday morning too. Doors open at 10am and Rob Davis, Chip and Shigeki will be playing. Both recoveries will be open until 6pm. Only $10 on the door makes it a bargain. Knowing that a portion of that goes to the Luncheon Club makes it a good deed too.

So, how does all that sound? We think it’s pretty safe to say that you have no excuses for sitting on the couch this weekend. Our scene is what you make of it. See you all out there!
