Heading Out this Melbourne Cup weekend? We’ve got the top picks for the hottest places to be – aside from the track of course!

September In October?
The Xchange officially opened all the way back in 1986. Back then it used to be a bit of a skanky men’s only venue that favoured older guys. Oh, how times have changed eh?

The years have flown by and the venue has had more facelifts than Cher, but it’s the true survivor of the Commercial Road strip, finding its niche with younger funksters and providing some of the best drag shows on the scene.

This Friday, the always popular Xchange Hotel celebrates its 22nd birthday in grand style, with a live performance by September at 10.30pm. Along with two hot male dancers, the sexy Euro star will perform her huge hit Cry For You. This has been billed as an Intergalactic Halloween Party and will also feature a costume competition, not to mention the drag shows that the Xchange is famous for. Without a doubt this is the must-do event of the Melbourne Cup long weekend. Happy 22nd birthday to the Xchange Hotel!

The Xchange’s 22nd Birthday Celebrations take place this Friday 31st October, with their Intergalactic Halloween theme, and let’s not forget, a super cool performance by September at 10:30pm.

The End is nigh!
It’s not all about horses and parties this Melbourne Cup weekend. It’s also about Sci-Fi geeks, collectables and super fun stuff for those young at heart. Melbourne Multimedia Expo Armageddon lands this weekend for two massive days to capture your imagination. Hailed as the greatest expo in the known universe, it includes cool stuff from comics to Manga, movies to wrestlers and video games to laser wars. So free your inner child (or nerd) and start off your party weekend with something a bit cultural!

Armageddon Multimedia Expo is on at the Melbourne Exhibition Centre, on November 1 and 2, 2008, from 9am to 6pm. Entry ranges from $10 (Children), $18 (Adult) and $50 (Families). Full info at their website – www.armageddonexpo.com.

Feel The Rush
The rooftop of South Melbourne’s Motel on a warm summer’s day is pretty tough to beat, especially when it’s taken over by cool queers rather than the usual bogan crowd. If the option to party under the lights as well as in the sunshine is what you’d like, then I’d say that this will be the party for you. Couple that with a killer DJ line up including local and interstate party favourites like Dan Murphy, Matt Steer, Murray Hood, Jimi Harrison and Haylenise and it’s a winner.

After you’re done at the day party, catch a free bus straight to the after party at Club Valve. It’s directly up against another big bash, so only time will tell who will come out on top. But with a great line up and venue, it’s damn good competition.

Rush is on Sunday 2nd November at Motel in York Street, South Melbourne. The fun begins from 11am and goes through till 6pm, after which you can catch a free bus to the after party at Valve. Tickets are $45 +bf and are on sale in the Same Same shop. Click here to buy yours.

Hot Little Ticket
Word on the grapevine is that this is the party that ‘everyone’ is going to. Billboard nightclub in Melbourne’s CBD plays host to the winning day party Rogue, which features a fresh line up of the scene’s next generation of DJs, including Greg Boladian, Dan Wilson and Andy Austin, along with a few familiar faces like Jake Kilby, Scruffy and David Virgona.

The concept and production comes from one half of the crew that brought you the popular Rawhide and Crash Palace parties. It has a sexy recently re-furbished interior too. A warning for smokers – the smoking room is abysmal to say the least, so your best option will be to pop out if you want to smoke. The event organisers may have taken care of this but it pays to be prepared.

Will it be the next Raw Hide or Crash Palace, or maybe even bigger? There’s only one way to find out.

The Rogue Dance Party is on Sunday 2nd November, from 12 noon till 8pm at Billboard Nightclub in the CBD. Tickets are $47 +bf and are on sale in the Same Same shop – click here for yours.

Horsing Around
The Market Hotel is always a great party option, and it really comes into its own on long weekends like Melbourne Cup. This time the savvy folks at the Market invite you to horse around at Horse Play, with wicked resident DJs Miss Elenie and Peter MacNamara. Top it off with an exclusive four hour set by USA DJ Eric Wikman aka Deepswing, and a great rooftop with views of the city, and it’s easy to see who the winner is… You!

Horse Play is on at the Market Hotel on Monday November 3 from 10pm till 9am Tuesday. Entry is $20, but if you’re a member, it’s free before midnight and just $15 after.

Love On The Green… Or In A Limo
The concept of decadent partying in a limo has finally landed in Melbourne courtesy of Silverfox Luxury Limo Parties, who brings us the biggest gAy-list weekly Sunday event, Gossip Sundays. Direct from Europe, this customised luxury coach limo is nothing short of stunning, both inside and out. Call ahead to find out all the info about this hot new addition to the Melbourne scene on 0415 787 228 or 0409 669 026.

But first, get in early at Gossip Sundays’ Queens Of The Turf party – doors open at 8pm. As usual with Love Machine on big weekends, this will be a sell out event so get in early or you won’t get in at all. If you’re done partying at this super venue and you still have a bit of money in your pocket, why not hop on the awesome limo service and taste the high life? It leaves the Machine at 5am. Or if you wanna book one for you and your mates exclusively, you can do that too.

Luxury Limo services range from $120 -$150 and include beer, champagne and food. Entry to Love Machine varies, depending on whether or not you’re a member or are on the guestlist, and ranges from $15 to $25 at the door.
