Meet Australian dance music producers Andy Van (previous member of Madison Avenue), Kam Denny and Cassie. Combined they make up Vandalism, one of Australia’s hottest dance exports.

“Vandalism is all about fun and getting people on the dance floor,” says Cassie, lead singer of the group. “We create electro house music and remixes. We try to make our live shows as entertaining as possible so people feel like they can really let their hair down.”

And entertaining they are! I managed to catch Vandalism at a Brisbane Big Gay Day in 2007 and they blew me away with a cool mix of DJ and live setup.

Having been around for five years now, Vandalism started out doing mash ups of other people’s work. It wasn’t until Cassie joined a year later that the band started taking shape.

“Andy and I had always wanted to work together and we thought the track Never Say Never would be perfect for Vandalism. It worked really well, and the boys asked if I would stay on with them as the vocalist.”

It’s a combination that works. With five overseas tours in the two years, things are certainly bubbling for the Melbourne trio.

“Every time we go overseas it keeps getting better for us,” Cassie says excitedly. “I think it has really paid off, as the audiences get bigger and better each time. We are so fortunate, because we get to see the world as well.”

With a fresh new single being released next month, more tours planned and a large amount of studio time, I had to ask what’s in the future for Vandalism?

“Our new single is a rendition of the classic track Bucci Bag, it’s a really fun track with very tongue in cheek lyrics. It has had such positive reactions every time we perform it in the show and it’s already in the top 10 on the Aria club charts after two weeks, we are very happy!

“I am learning so much about songwriting and really want to perfect the art as much as humanly possible. I am co-writing some tracks for the Bodyrox (UK dance artist) album with a songwriter friend Duane Morrisson at the moment and really want to keep writing for other artists in the future.”

Perhaps Vandalism will reach the holy grail of Australian dance music and break into the US market?

I ask Cassie just what people can expect when Vandalism play live at Brisbane’s Fluffy High School Reunion party this weekend.

“People bouncing of walls, eyes popping out, sequined hot pants and some serious booty shaking,” she says mischievously. “And the boys looking hot as they spin their CDJs and hang naked from the mirror balls!”

Vandalism’s new single Bucci Bag is out now through Vicious Grooves. Brisbanites can see them in all their glory at Fluffy’s High School Reunion Party, May 3 2009.
