Monsters Inc.

Avenue Q is on its way to Sydney. Kate and Trekkie, two of the fabulous monsters from the show, take time out of their crazy schedules to chat to Same Same’s Daniel Murphy.

What can you tell us about the other residents of Avenue Q that we may not already know?

Kate: I’m not 100% sure what goes on in Trekkie’s apartment, but he and the Bad Idea Bears get together and make a lot of noise on a regular basis. They’ve kept me awake until all hours with their shenanigans. Not that it’s any on my business.

Trekkie: Brian sneaks up to my apartment most nights to check out my latest porn finds on the internet. Nicky sometimes joins him.

Living on the same avenue as Gary Coleman, do you ever feel you could sell his story now? Do you think you could stop the jokes about Gary? Or maybe even get some of his money back for him with the royalties?

Kate: I think Gary’s been through enough but the jokes will continue unfortunately. He’s my friend.

Trekkie: I spoke to Gary about maybe doing a porn film, that would get him noticed again. Damn, I’d watch it.

You both have quite different views on the internet and its uses. How do you feel about the world wide web these days? Have your views influence each other?

Kate: I used to love the internet, but Trekkie has tainted my views on it somewhat – he made me Google “PLUSHIES”.

Trekkie: I wish I had faster broadband.

With beautiful hair and soft looking fur, there are many bears (as in furry gay men not teddy kind) out there dying to know… what are your beauty secrets?

Kate: Fur is beautiful – always remember that. Don’t remove it because it makes you who you are

Trekkie: Hair gel.

Depression is something that affects a lot of people worldwide and Princeton was quite down for a while there. What do you think about depression and the best ways to beat it?

Kate: I think it’s important to remember that its very common, so you’re not alone. Also, the more open you are about it, the easier it is to get through. Talking is a great thing.

Trekkie: I think depression very important issue, don’t hide from the world. Get out there and tell people. Talking about it can really help. I tell Brian my issues – although usually it’s that my internet is not fast enough.

Monsters get a very hard time out there today. What are you doing to life the monster awareness and combat the prejudices some people have?

Kate: I’m opening the Monsterssori School, Everyone is welcome – monster or human. Hopefully that will bring more harmony between the two.

Trekkie: Working on some websites to create some awareness. He he!

With your ongoing battle against racism towards monsters and your special school for the monsters, how do you feel about human/monster relationships? Especially considering the budding romance between Kate and Princeton?

Kate: Princeton is wonderful. We’re taking it slow. I’ve dated both human and monsters, and it all comes down to the person’s heart.

Trekkie: I’m not fussy!

There are so many people to look up to as role models these days. Who do you think is the biggest anti-role model these days?

Kate: I don’t believe that anyone is all bad but I’m not a fan of Pauline Hanson. I mean, everyone’s a little bit racist, but seriously… come on!

Trekkie: Oscar the Grouch (he needs to conceal his dirtiness).

The future can be daunting and none of us really know what life has planned for us. What do you hope is in store for you?

Kate: I will be running to Monsterssori School, married to a lovely guy, and have three kids. Hopefully.

Trekkie: I hope to be surfing for a long time. (Not waves).
