They’re hot, sweet and filthy. Steve Cruz and Bruno Bond are huge names in the porn industry right now. Sexy performer and director, Cruz has received a slew of awards including the 2009 Naked Sword ‘Man Of The Year’ and the 2009 Hard Choice ‘Best New Director’, just to name a few. Cruz played a big part in the discovery of the ruggedly handsome performer and art director Bruno Bond who is also getting industry acclaim. These real life boyfriends work together professionally and personally, steaming things up both in front of and behind the camera.
Same Same caught up with these two sexy men on the eve of their first visit to Australia where they will be meeting fans, premiering their latest film Hard Friction and working with the Victorian AIDS Council in promoting the safe sex message by launching a hot new Safe Sex calendar.
Have you ever been to Australia? What are you most looking forward to doing when you get to Melbourne?
STEVE: No, but all my life I’ve fantasized about Oz. First up, if the weather is good I want to do The Eureka Skydeck. Also can’t wait to meet the boys.
BRUNO: This is my first trip to Australia. I am very excited to meet all of the guys in Melbourne and seeing this beautiful city!
What were you doing before your porn career began?
STEVE: I was in a quiet relationship, overworked and under appreciated. Bored, really.
BRUNO: Renovating houses and generally being a slut.
What inspired you to get into porn in the first place? Was it something you’ve always wanted to do anyway?
STEVE: The owner of Raging Stallion pursued me until I said yes. I was a hard sell at first, I wasn’t sure I’d be good porn. Glad I was wrong. I’m having the time of my life!
BRUNO: Steve Cruz inspired me to get into porn. He and I met through MySpace and started talking. I had been working out for years and was coming to terms with being an exhibitionist. Opportunities happened. I met the right people. Everything fell into place.
Has your life changed much since you started doing porn? How has it changed?
BRUNO: Yes totally! I fell in love and moved to San Francisco to be with Steve. I met all of the great people at Raging Stallion and started working there full time as the Art Director for the movies. I also get to travel and meet all of the great fans and promote healthy sexual attitudes. The best part is playing and working with the man I love!
STEVE: In 3 short years I’ve totally changed! I travel constantly. I run my own production company. I have fans all over the world. I’m still in awe of my life, and very grateful. I’m definitely not bored.
What is the biggest misconception about you?
STEVE: I’m not as tall in-person. Small guys photograph huge so it surprises people to find I’m often the shortest guy in the room. I’m also pretty friendly, people seem surprised I’m approachable.
BRUNO: That I am mean and scary. When people meet me, they always say that I am nicer in person than they were expecting from my movies.
What do you feel is the biggest misconception about having a career in porn?
BRUNO: Probably that the performers are insatiable sex addicts and that there is a lot of money to be made. To me, it is more about having fun and the great adventure.
STEVE: Some people bitch at me, why don’t you get a real job? I work harder now than I have my whole life. Being a performer is very physical work. As a director/producer we have demanding release schedules and deadlines. I never stop filming or editing, or stop thinking of the next idea or release. Travel and appearances are a nice perk though, working vacations. When I had a desk job, I was infinitely less productive. As I remember it, most of my co-workers were ‘busy’ surfing the internet and living for 5pm.
Is there a lot of body up-keep when you’re a porn star?
STEVE: For me I have to work at it. Cardio and weight training 2 hours a day every weekday, every week, every month, every year. I don’t eat sugar. No carbs after 6pm. Keeping up with appearances is a second job.
BRUNO: As a performer, you always have to be in top physical condition. Obviously, you need to look good, but looking good in person doesn’t always translate to looking good on film. You have to be super fit. Abs are so important, that is unless your cock is so gigantic that no one cares. For me, it is the gym six days a week. Also, filming a sex scene can take from four to eight hours. That is like running a marathon, you have to have stamina!
You’re pornstars, but are you really sexual guys? Do you really love sex as much as performance on videos show?
BRUNO: I really do love sex! I always have. I also really get turned on by having sex in front of an audience. It makes for a good time for me and a better show for the viewer. It isn’t just filming a hook up, you have to be giving a performance for the audience.
STEVE: Most of my life, boyfriends and friends tried to shame me for being a cock-hound! Eventually you dump the assholes and embrace who you are. The irony is now that I’ve been doing this for a few years I don’t really hookup as much. I have most of my adventures on camera and I’ve become more selective. Ethical slut?
What are some of the things you had always wanted to do when you got into porn? Have you done them all yet?
BRUNO: I wanted to be in exceptional movies with really hot guys. That is happening. I wanted to travel and meet the fans and spread the hot, safer sex message. I am also doing that. I would really like to have sex in front of a live audience. Still waiting on that one…
STEVE: I had a few goals.. I wanted a box cover, a starring role in a movie, a MEN magazine cover, travel opportunities and a short list of porn stars I had to work with before it ended. I did most of them in the first 6 months, then I far surpassed my expectations. I launched a safe sex campaign and a condom. I formed a production company and I direct for the most prestigious porn companies, Falcon. I just performed with Francesco D’Macho in Focus for Raging Stallion so that was the last star on my ‘to do’ list. I feel very accomplished and at the same time the future is wide open.
Is there anyone in the industry that you really want to work with?
BRUNO: I have been very lucky in my career thus far to be with some of the hottest stars working now (Steve Cruz, Logan McCree, David Taylor, Tyler Saint, Dominic Pacifico, Ty LeBeouf, Ryan Raz and Damien Crosse). I have also worked with some great new talent especially through HardFriction.com.
STEVE: As a director and performer I think I’ve worked with almost everyone. So my attentions are on discovering the hot new stars… We haven’t met him yet.
What have been some of your porn career highlights to date?
BRUNO: I have the best time meeting the fans at events like Folsom Street Fair, IML, Hustlaball and whenever I travel to cities to bars and clubs. The fans are what makes this all worth doing!
STEVE: Winning Grabby’s Performer of the Year Award for 2008. Didn’t see it coming! Having a dream to fly to the Canary Islands and film a scene on a catamaran, and then 2 months later doing it. And having such a loyal fan base, a 3 year career as a performer and still going strong.
Where do you see your career going?
BRUNO: I am happy to be in front of the camera for as long as I can! I am very excited about my work behind camera. I design the sets and wardrobe for Raging Stallion and I also work as a camera man for the studio. Steve and I have our own production company, Hard Friction, where we work with mostly new talent on creating our own vision of what we find erotic.
STEVE: I’m working more behind the scene than ever before… as a videographer, editor, director for Raging Stallion, Falcon and our production company. I hope to see that project grow and eventually be on the cutting edge of where porn is going. I’ll probably perform for the fans for as long as they want to see me, but it’s nice to know as a performer I’ve hit the mark in my industry. The rest is icing on the cake.
You’re here to promote the safe sex message as well as your latest video / DVD. Are there times in your life when you’ve had unsafe sex? Would you still make that choice again? Why or why not?
BRUNO: As a teenager, I had unsafe sex with other teenagers. As I got older, I realised the risk and started wearing condoms. I have had boyfriends with whom I made a decision not to wear condoms. I believe that it is most responsible to wear a condom as your standard practice. There are exceptions, but ‘I don’t like how it feels’ is not one of them! I was in a relationship from 1999 to 2005. When we broke up and I started dating again, it disturbed me to learn how many younger guys did not practice safer sex. Also, there were no free condoms in bars any more. I actually had to buy them for the first time! I always used to grab a handful from the bowl by the door when I left the club. I want to help bring them back again in the US!
STEVE: I spent most of my early 20s partying and having risky sex. It’s a miracle I survived my darker years. I’m very public about this. I try to use my experience to help others avoid the hard choices I made in my past. I lost very close friends to HIV. Most guys I know who are positive are living with HIV, thanks to the medications. It’s convenient to forget HIV is still a deadly virus. As a single guy, men were always pressuring me to bareback. It’s gotten so relaxed that I felt safer negotiating sex on a porn set where condoms are enforced than in my private life. Thankfully I met Bruno. We have sex with a lot of strangers for work. We feel it’s best to use condoms every time – no questions.
You’re both out here looking for possible Aussie porn talent. What are you looking for?
BRUNO: I’m looking for fit guys who are enthusiastic about having sex on camera! Big cocks are great, but enthusiasm and good performance is the most fun to watch. Aussie guys are hot. I want to film as many of them naked as I can!
STEVE: Great asses are hot too, Bruno.
What attracts you to a guy? What do you look for physically?
BRUNO: Sexual energy attracts me to a guy. Hot guys come in all shapes and sizes. Good energy and enthusiasm are the best!
STEVE: I’m attracted to a lot of different things… a great body, a great face, uncut men are a huge turn on for me but I agree with Bruno, all of it is lost when his attitude sucks. A confident open sexuality transcends all… and a sense of humour.
How do you relax? What do you like to do to unwind?
STEVE: Television puts me to sleep – the tranquiliser of the masses. I’m out in 15 minutes. I like to listen to The Secret by Rhonda Byrne on my iPod, helps me focus and de-stress.
BRUNO: I like to workout hard, have deep massages… and great sex!
Spend the night with Bruno Bond and Steve Cruz when they appear in Melbourne on November 27th, at the Laird and then Club 80. Then catch them in Sydney for World AIDS Day in Taylor Square on December 1st before an ACON Safe Sex Forum on December 4 at the Saddle Bar.
