Inaya Makes Our Day

Inaya Day is back in Australia for another round of gigs and it feels like only yesterday since she was last on our shores. “It feels marvellous to be back,” she laughs. “The worst part about being here is having to leave!”

Ms. Day was born in New York City and started singing in church in Brooklyn. She studied musical theatre at University in Connecticut before appearing on Broadway as an understudy in the role of Dorothy in The Wiz. She later made the role her own in Washington D.C. and St. Louis, Missouri. Since then Day has rubbed shoulders with some of the best in the business – including the late Michael Jackson, the Reverend Al Green, Sean “Puffy” Combs and Queen Latifah, and she’s also written songs for Randy Crawford and Missy Elliot.

So what’s she been up to lately?

“I’ve been constantly writing and recording. I’ve released four songs already – Let There Be, Superstar, Better Days and Never Had Another Love, and it’s only January! There are many more to come!”

Inaya’s best known for her work on tracks like Moving Up (Take My Problems To The Dance Floor), Nasty Girl, Horny, The Glamorous Life and Breakaway. If you’ve ever danced in a gay bar, chances are you’ve shimmied and shaken to Inaya at some point. Last weekend she performed at Melbourne’s T Dance, and describes the energy from the crowd as “amazing”.

“The show was so much fun! I got to perform with some awesome dancers too.”

This time around Inaya said that before each show she’ll be playing a short video she’s made in honour of the people of Haiti. She’ll also be debuting her new single Never Had Another Love. “That song’s been getting lots of love,” says Inaya with a smile. “I’m so anxious for the Aussie release.”

Inaya will be enjoying most of the Australian summer, playing gay gigs all over the country up until March. While she’s here she plans on spending as much time as she can in front of the silver screen. “I’ve been watching as many movies as I can to catch up! I love movies, but when I’m in New York I’m not able to go to the theatre as often as I’d like.”

Inaya Day’s remaining tour dates are as follows:

Jan 30 – Pinkalicious, Melbourne
Feb 14 – Fluffy, Family, Brisbane
Feb 25 – Shake It, The Argyle, Sydney
March 7 – Bitch Official Girls Recovery, Oxford Art Factory, Sydney.
