The deliciously unhinged Glace Chase, known to a select few as Rick Viede, is back with a hot new show – ‘Last Night’s Beauty Queen’. We asked him a few questions as he polished his tiara.
So tell us about your new show ‘Last Night’s Beauty Queen’. What’s it about?
Well, in my tours around the world I’ve noticed a very very insidious problem. And I’m not talking about the virginity pledge. Unhappiness – that’s the problem. It would be easy to blame this on Steve Jobs’ pancreatic cancer but I think it’s more complex than that. It involves drugs, or the lack thereof, blockbuster movies, gay bars, parental death and the big one: charity ribbons. So I’m using my experience as winner of the Li’l Mr Celebrity USA ‘91 beauty pageant to help people understand what to do about these very serious problems.
How does this show differ to Glace’s last show, “I Am Glace Chase”?
My last show was about me. This show is about you. My last show was my favourite, but this one is shaping up to be more popular with the punters. Go figure. The only other thing to say about my new show is it’s triple as camp and twice as assy!
So you’re part of this year’s Mardi Gras Festival. What are your thoughts about Mardi Gras this year?
Are you trying to make me say something political? Well I won’t except to say that Tony Abbott is really gay – not in the good way. And so is Mardi Gras – but totally in the good way!
As for the line-up – it’s fantastic! I’m in it! Plus loads of my friends are performing. My highlights – my fave band The Blow Waves, darling Frisky & Mannish from the UK, uber serious gay theatre ‘Bent’, and then I’ve got my show across three venues. Thank god they’ve given me a minder… And let’s not forget the big highlight, the woman I will take a bullet for – Ms Whitney!
What do you want audiences to take away from your show?
I only want one thing. For my audience to have their lives changed. Forever. Is that too much to ask? I think not.
Glace Chase – Last Night’s Beauty Queen plays at Darlinghurst Theatre from 12 Feb to March 6, Parramatta Riverside Feb 16 and 17, and at the Mardi Gras Festival Bar on Feb 23.
