The girls’ Designer Vagina got a nationwide airing, and now Sydney electro-hunnies The Blush Foundation are poised to reveal their Pretty Little Heart.

“We’ve been on such a mad journey,” band members Billie and Leia tell Same Same. “We’re counting down the days until the release of their debut album – it’s been years in the making.”

Pretty Little Heart is set to be launched with a live show on the 8th of May at the Red Rattler Theatre in Marrickville. The night’s entertainment features some of Sydney’s hottest indie performers and DJs such as Sveta, Adonis, Lillian Star, Jen Moore, Pony and post-punk electronic acts by Snout Cassette and Michi-Child of Science.

So how does one describe a live gig with the lady-lovin’ synth-pop girlband? “It’s akin to bumping into Jane Fonda in a dank alley as she is attempting to slip out the back door of a trashy eighties fashion shoot with mascara streaming down her face,” the girls cheekily sum up.

“The best way to describe our music is synth-pop indie electro,” Billie elaborates. “When we met each other five years ago, things were so electric. We knew we had to do something together. It started off as guitar jams in the park then realising we both shared a love of 80s music it progressed to the computer and keyboard.

“After five years our sound has grown and changed so much although you can still hear its original roots – there’s still a gothy/New Romantic darkness layered with 80s inspired beats and baselines.”

The Blush Foundation have been playing on the queer Aussie scene for several years now, most notably as guest acts at Sydney’s Mardi Gras Party and Melbourne’s LadyFest. They’ve also had nationwide radio play with their songs Mass Kaos, Designer Vagina, Heart Bake and Blush Bandits, all of which appear on their first album.

The risqué lyrics on Designer Vagina certainly got them noticed. Here’s a ‘taste’:

Pink bits, nice tits
oh those hips, oh those lips
no invitation for those hard dicks
girls like girls – pink bits
get it on with two or one
or whatever makes you come
to pull the trigger on your clit gun
to make juice run til you go numb

“We never intended to be agent provocateurs,” Bille laughs when Same Same mentions the titillating track. “That’s one of our oldest songs and was written before the media coined the term for cosmetic vaginal surgery,” she explains.

“We are strongly against women getting plastic surgery on their va-jay-jay’s. We love them au natural. We love and celebrate all muffs in our song, and people who actually listen to the whole lyrics get that.”

Their album drop is an event the girls realise their fans have been impatiently waiting many moons for. “We have people who have been supporting us from the beginning and people discovering us now,” Billie enthuses. “We love them all.

“All our fans are so lovely. Except for a couple of creepy middle-aged straight men who have tried it on. Weird…”

The Blush Foundation’s Debut Album Launch happens from 8pm Saturday 8 May at The Red Rattler, 6 Faversham Street, Marrickville, Sydney. Admission is $12.
