Introducing Victoria Vogue – Australian drag queen and YouTube comedienne!

There are some questions that Google just can’t answer. This is where new YouTuber Victoria Vogue comes in – but she does much more than answer your questions… her goal is to entertain and inform.

The man behind the make-up, 24-year-old Wollongong resident William English tells Same Same: “When someone sends me a question through, no matter what it is, I just try to have fun with it.”

English has come a long way since HSC drama, which is the first time he did drag, in a bid to “shock his classmates” in the small country town of Scone. It was a few years later before English dolled himself up and hit the streets of the somewhat unprepared steel city.

Despite having only been online with YouTube vids for four months, Ms. Vogue has a slew of devoted viewers who hit play quicker than Casey Donovan pulls a crowd to Stonewall. The most unexpected amongst her fans are Fataussiebarstard and Ms Burpy, whose YouTube names say it all. Victoria Vogue’s humour is just that powerful. She’s funnier than “that one time, when, oh you had to be there” and manages to transform the mundane into the hilarious.

“It comes back to that whole spontaneity and impromptu thing, you don’t know what’s coming and it’s a little bit thrilling,” says English. When a real telemarketer calls during a vlog, Victoria takes it all in her well-heeled and stockinged (to stop the thigh wobble) stride – it’s just that kind of show.

Every episode Victoria presents us with an exciting new version of herself, channeling disco diva one week and hot school teacher the next, whilst always delivering the same quick wit and vibrant energy. “I’m a more feminine drag queen than I am a high camp drag queen. I wear skirts and blouses, no three foot tall wigs or gaudy coloured wigs… I don’t know if I will ever settle on a particular style, I enjoy seeing my wardrobe evolve every week.”

Her attitude is all-Australian in its irreverence and honesty but all drag queen in what is a self-described ‘vanity project’. “I don’t think I’m pushing the envelope so far that I’d have people unsubscribing en mass but I’m definitely not going to be a PC person on YouTube,” the diva explains. “It’s no secret that what started as a rebuff to all the ‘stupid questions’ people ask to get attention, has become quite the attention grabber for Victoria herself.

“The interaction that I have with other people because of the videos, the e-mails, the comments and the feedback that I get on a daily basis just makes my day, every day.”

With her charmingly self-deprecating manner, Victoria chooses to flaunt her ‘flaws’ and thus beats the ‘trolls’ to the punch. She calls herself all manner of things that would be highly offensive from any other mouth, in a lengthy tirade the worst hater couldn’t begin to articulate. “It takes an awful lot to offend me and just as much to shock me.” As it is, you might laugh so much you dry wretch, much like Victoria does in her reaction to 2 girls, 1 cup. The only thing she cares about more than cigarettes and V (the energy drink), is getting a laugh out of you.

Recently, Victoria expanded from the traditional single-angle, webcam view, adding greater scope to her content with cutaways and skits. In a recent offering, Victoria turns the tables with a serious personal video about what being a drag queen means to the person behind the persona. Since people are always bringing their questions to English, who does he go to when he’s a bit stuck? “My biological mother and my drag mother because they are two of the cleverest, most experienced people I know and they are very good with giving advice. Obviously, depending on the topic, I will go to one or the other.”

The glamorous Victoria Vogue is such good company you just can’t stop at one video. To get started, send a question to askadragqueen@hotmail.com or visit her YouTube channel.

No question is too tricky. Victoria manages to get herself out of every tight situation, apart from those she puts herself in, revealing, “I love a good dare.”
