This 18-year-old Same Samer says a lot of self-righteous B.S. appeared on his Facebook page following Mardi Gras… and he thinks some payback may be necessary. We agree – have a read.

This is a message to all the Ronalds out there. We all know Ronald, though his name might actually be Matt or Joe. He’s that kooky conservative (perhaps not as kooky as Fred Nile or Rick Perry) who feels an absolute urge to hijack our conversations, our Facebook feeds and our Twitter timelines with their views on religion, politics or a mixture of both – hoping perhaps to win us over to “the bright side.” And unfortunately, thus has a tendency to broadcast his “objective” views on homosexuality.

Oddly enough, he’s usually an “intellectual” – a university student of sorts who criticizes the theories of Keynes and Hayek but takes the work of Miranda Devine and John Heard with an incredible amount of credence. He’ll argue that homosexuality is wrong not merely because “the Bible says so” – though that often gets thrown in – but also on the grounds that his Church can’t possibly be wrong on anything and that there’s nothing to prove that homosexuality is in fact “not a disorder” – despite what the American Psychiatric Association, Royal College of Psychiatrists and the World Health Organisation have to say on the matter.

Now, I have nothing against religious conservatives or the expression of their views – to an extent, I see the sharing and discussion of viewpoints and ideas as one of the benefits of our modern, democratic age. But I could never see why the Ronalds of this world always seem to feel the need to somehow drill us about what they think of what it means to be gay. Personally, I couldn’t care less. But I know people who read my Facebook wall that do care. Closeted homosexuals waiting to come out but are scared that the Ronalds of this world will pounce on them like they pounce on the posts on my ‘wall.’ Insecure LGBT youth are struggling to find security in themselves and their newly-found sexual identities. Gay Christians who are just finding out there is no angel-whore split between their faith and their sexuality.

So I ask the Ronalds out there: why bother? Why waste your time hijacking the posts, conversations and statuses of LGBT people and their supporters when, quite frankly, they aren’t going to budge on their views in the same way you aren’t budging on yours. Why risk adding to the pain and confusion that LGBT youth face on a daily basis because of discrimination and bigotry at their schools? Why reinforce the notion that LGBT people are substandard and incapable of proper function?

One day, I might see your viewpoint – that is, what you have against homosexuals and homosexual relationships beyond the fact that you think your Church has a problem with them. But I doubt I will. I doubt I’ll ever sink to the level of ignorance and bigotry that you display online and in person. And the hope is that I never do.

But maybe one day you’ll see that your “theological” outbursts and homophobic rants are legitimately hurting people out there. Until that day comes, I hope you can remain silent and let us – the “sinners” you so find “disordered” – live out our lives without your negative and bigoted input.
