Surf’s up! Think of it as Mardi Gras by the beach or Midsumma on the seashore. A one-of-a-kind LGBT event showcase, CoastOut in Coffs Harbour is an annual diverse celebration of sport, the arts and culture.
Kicking off again for 2012 this October 26-28, head to the harbour for surf competitions, parties, talks, beach activities, bowls, a fair day and even a Kylie memorabilia exhibition.
It’s the third annual CoastOut, with its organisers hoping to see not only the locals enjoying the adventures in the sun but also a range of visitors to the region return and others experience the beautiful Coffs Coast for the first time.
The entertainment line-up for CoastOut is huge. Last year’s Festival saw over 50 singers, dancers, musicians, comedians and artists come together for the three days and this year aims to top that.
Bob Downe will make a special appearance at Coast Out’s Fair Day at Park Beach Reserve, with singer/songwriter Monique Brumby and the funny and talented Carpenters from Kempsey will perform a selection of classic Carpenters songs.
This year’s Cocktail Party host is a star from the widely popular Priscilla stage musical, Nick Hardcastle. Festival favorite Sandy Bottom returns as this year’s host of the hugely popular ‘Drag Out The Dolphins’ show. Also, hand picked live singing drag queens such as Australia’s Got Talent audience favorite Wayne Rogers will perform alongside our marine friends at Coffs Harbour’s Pet Porpoise Pool.
Award-winning indie pop group Radio INK will join hot new wave synths duo Garcon Garcon at Party In The Park alongside popular DJ Adam Cox. The Party continues at the Hoey Moey with Melbourne DJ Mike Evans and ‘The First Lady Of House’ herself, Kate Monroe.
One unique part of CoastOut for 2012 is a special exhibition celebrating 25 years of Kylie Minogue’s pop career.
Vinyl, cassette, CD and DVD – it’s all there, including rare pieces like Kylie’s original Fan Club kit, magazine covers, books and signature fragrances along with tour merchandise to take you down memory lane. Many pieces have been kindly donated by her sister Dannii and personally signed by Kylie herself.
A focal point of the exhibition will be the ‘Fan Wall’ featuring a montage of photos contributed by Kylie fans from around the world, each pictured with their own personal favorite piece of Kylie memorabilia. Visitors are also invited to leave a personal message to Kylie in a special book, which will later be presented to Ms. Minogue herself.
And as always, a focal point of CoastOut will be the annual Surf Competiton, which is possibly the world’s only gay and lesbian-organised surfing comp, and his seen surfers arrive from as far away as Hawaii and France to hit the waves. Mens and Womens Open and Longboard divisions will begin on Friday 26th with heats continuing and finals held on Saturday 27th October.
So grab your friends, your towel and your dancing shoes and join CoastOut for a weekend of sun, sand, surf and fun. Same Same will be there snapping pictures throughout the weekend’s events and we’re looking forward to seeing you!
