Aside from the glaringly obviously answers of "hot sex" and "more hot sex" what is the Ultimate Gay Melbourne experience?

I haven't really lived here long enough to know the low down (especially on the down-lo) but from what i've experienced i'd have to say

- waking up to a queer breakfast radio show every morning
- cracking up at some of the stories in MCV

even Sydney doesn't provide this much gayness in my dayness! go figure?

and reply...

The biggest problem, in my humble opinion, between Sydney and Melbourne is people's constant need to compare the two - where, in fact, there are no similarities.

I live in Melbourne [moved here from northern Queensland 7 years ago] and travel to Sydney quite often for meetings. I personally PREFER Melbourne - due mainly to its climate [yes I like the cooler weather], the culture [Viva Opera Australia], the architecture and the people. Sydney however offers an equally vibrant [albeit faster paced and somewhat segmented] gay scene. One such area which instantly comes to mind in "village - like" Newtown, which offers punters a fabulous array of nightspots, eateries, shopping and more. I have often seen guys and girls walking down King Street holding hands [as they often do in St. Kilda and Chapel Street also].

Living in St. Kilda probably clouds one view of Melbourne, as it is possibly the most gay friendliest area in the Country [with neighbouring Prahran and South Yarra], but I have never felt unwelcomed in Sydney either.

In conclusion, I believe it is what you want out of your scene / life / gayness which denotes where you end up residing. Sydney is certainly bigger and faster, Melbourne more laid back and culturally enhanced, Sydney is the centre of many businesses in the country, Melbourne has some of the finest festivals, theatres, and natural attractions, Sydney has the amazing harbour, Melbourne has a european atmosphere and [somewhat] ethos to life.

Some people [shock horror] even decide to commute between the two - enjoying both equally. It is certainly a fabulous world in which we live though, when, as gay people, we have two such wonderful cities in which to live [or visit]. Don't spend too much time questioning their advantages or comparing their attributes - simply enjoy them both for what they are.

Viva la Difference.

I have grown up in Sydney and lived here all my life. My work has fortunately taken me to Melbourne. It has always been a pleasure and I have found the Melbourne gay folk to be far more friendly and less elitest.

you know what? you're totally right. now that we have jetstar and the like, we can fly for a pretty cheap price.

you've inspired me. maybe i'll fly down for midsumma? i could do with the touch of class that melbourne brings... and it's so spot on - we should enjoy that the cities are so different, and lap up both experiences.

i'm gonna go book my tickets now!

i commute between sydney & melbourne a fair bit. i have to say i prefer going out in melbourne but maybe because its all new & unchartered territory.

i had a fairly average time at Diva Bar but i blame the big fat man trying to stick his fingers up my arse all night for that!

joy fm truely is a great station as well - great bunch of people, great tunes & great content :)

Fabulous answer Brett. No need to make a decision or compare the 2, but celebrate them both for their unique differences.
