I found this article in today's Sun Herald - http://www.smh.com.au/articles/2007/10/06/1191091421787.html
I'm glad that this actually ended up coming about and a big congrats to Maxi Shield for getting out there and making it happen. By going about it this way she has also managed to generate media attention. I'm pleased to see Clover Moore and the Police Minister going along with it. It certainly raises awareness - let's now hope some good comes out of it

yes, love a bit of maximum shieldage - quality lady.
Maxi Shield, who has been performing around Oxford Street for 10 years, said she was a regular victim of discrimination.
"I've been spat on, verbally abused and had eggs thrown at me," she said as a bottle was kicked in her direction by a passer-by in Taylor Square.
isn't that ridiculous? i swear, there's no way you'd get me walking down oxford street on the weekend in drag. no fucking way. that strip gets more and more vile by the day.
the gay scene is just so different from the straight one - i mean, when was the last time you saw a fight happen in a gay bar? of course, they happen a lot more now that we've let the straights in.
i wish some more licensees had the balls to stand up and have a door policy that protected us. i am glad someone's out there making a difference on the strip - cos once it's gone it;s impossible to get it back...
not sure that the whole genq angels thing is a good idea... i mean, it tackles the symptom, not the cause... and sounds like a marketing opportunity than anything.
i have the few venues i'll be sticking to and god help me if they get shut down too!

What George Newhouse is doing is great but has little relevance when he should not be turning his back to the issue of the Pulp Mill

I think it awesome that someone has finally gotten the politicians off their asses and onto the street to see for themselves. KUDOS to Maxi for that.
Taylor-Dayne I think the Street Angels is a top idea too and the very least it is bringing mainstream media attention to this problem (something no one else has been able to do) and forcing the people with the power at act rather than pass it off as someone elses problem. I think you are a little cynical suggesting it's marketing opportunity.
KUDOS to the Angels too.
