View Full Version : Can Brisbane do with a new upmarket gay venue?

Have you guys/gals ever wondered if it might be time for Brisbane to have another gay venue. What do we have in town? The Beat, Wickham and Fluffy Sundays? really now.... Nothing exclusive. We need a up-market venue we can call home for Fridays and Saturdays only. A comfy lounge and a cool dance floor. I bet same same patrons will flock there. Will patrons be prepared to go to a venue like this outside the Valley presinct? Cheers. dejavu

Hmmm .... not sure if people would be prepared to go outside the Valley presinct? Maybe West End???? I totally agree with you though, there is really nowhere to go apart from The Beat or Wickham on a Friday and Saturday night. A little birdie told me that BOOM is getting a make over and will be turning into a very hot place for us gay guys and gals to hang out. :) :)

BOOM? Forgive me for my ignorance but I have been here 3 years and have never heared of that place. Where is it? And what was it? :-P Why I am asking is that I am exploring the idea of doing something about it. Maybe you can come DJ at the new place!! hehe I see you know your stuff.

Ooo wow, really? Boom's getting a makeover/ The name of that place always scared me away hahaha.
I thought Brisbane did get a new gay venue, but then again I haven't seen it whenever I'm out so maybe that was rubbish.
I'd love to see a new gay venue. West End yeh maybe - isn't that the lesbian suburb anyway? :P

of course brisbane needs a new venue - we all know that!
just don't let it turn into the wickham ~ book some djs with taste.
it would be nice to have a clean, classy venue to hang out in. i'm sick of going to gay venues and events in buildings that are dirty and run down. i often wonder if it's part of the ghetto mentality that we can't get it together to be in a classy venue
yeah ~ definitely do something about it. but don't just do your market research here. the audience is a bit limited ATM. xx

BOOM is a club that opens at 5am when all the other clubs close. It doesn't sell alcohol but is still pumpin for all those people that don't want to go home. By what I've been told, it will be getting a license and opening at night as a regular club.
So, where are you thinking of for a new club? You have my support! But I agree with Kylie, there needs to be a lot of market research done and DJ'S that don't play the same crap in every set!

the scene needs a venue that is open to all......
one of the biggest problems in Bris is that the people going out have created their own seperatism... ie older guys and lesbians and bad drag at Sporties, The Wick is a seen to be seen venue ( tragic marys and their followrrs arggghhhhh) and the beat is twink heaven ( or twink chasers.. again arghhhhh) and lets not even mention Fluffy.. i will leave it at **just look at any of the pics from there anywhere** and you can see who it attracts...
I have a dream... a dream of a venue where any gay person, no matter how old young gay str8 male female or inbetween, trannies drag , fat thin muscles short tall and all the other variations that make up the true gay culture... can dance chat mix laugh hang out celebrate ( pick up if thats your thing) chill groove relax vegetate go nuts and everything else.... without fear of some nasty piece telling them they shouldnt be doing it, or wearing it, or kissing it, or whatever.. ( cmon you get my point)
i would love to see a venue like that.... but back to the real world..
would love a venue that is more chill and relaxed earlier... and great grooves later.... still i would want it accepting of ALL the culture.. not just specific parts...
does anyone remember the good old days of options.. when the two lesbians owned it... ( in the early days of owning it b4 they ripped the community off) it was exactly as i described... all walks of the community mixed and had a ball.... it was great....
anyway... back to reality.....

Ooooo Ottart..
Sounds perfect!
I think Brisbane is screaming out for something different, less sceney than some bars, better-dressed than others, and welcoming all members of the community, music tastes opening hours etc.
Especially the whole chill early/party later idea. Wouldn't it be nice to have a well-designed and clean lounge/wine-bar feel which could move into party atmosphere at 11 or so? Even serving late afternoon coffee/alcohol without music blaring.
Press Club used to do that early-late musical merge well, and "departure lounge" upstairs at the wickham was tops too.
I'm a lesbian who loves hanging out with gay guys AND other lesbians. The current "women only" rules actually keep me out of the lesbian bars as most of my friends are guys. I feel uncomfortable alone.
Also I hate be such a lesbo, but a couple of pool tables give some people something to do and a reason to chat with others at times.
I think it would need to be in or near valley/spring hill so that people can check it out without going out of their (normal gay venue) way.
p.s. this utopian gay club needs Galaga at the same price as straight bars, not DOUBLE the price (naughty Wickham - no smacks for you!)

How many clubs have opened over the years and never suceeded.. to many to count.
Most people just wanna go out and have fun times with mates and make new friends.. dont they? I've been around the ridges for years, and everytime it's the same thing.
Don't get me wrong when i say this, but everytime ya go out, there's drag queens prancing around on stage so high on drugs they dunno if there arthur or martha, abusing people for not being a beutiful as themselves.. Beutiful (BWAH) take a long hard look at yourself luvy's! Thinking there so much better than the average person.. go take some more drugs! Competitions for the hottest male, just an excuse to get a free feel of something they'll never have. Bar Staff.. always rude, and serve the "hotest guys first".. money is money isn't it? Wanna game of pool, don't bother you'll never get a go, people don't like to share. Trying to find a venue thats drug free, good luck. Wanna go out just to get pissed and have a few drinks, everyone is high on something.. gees its a good look. Security standing out front, hmm they must be blind/dumb, or is it just paid off. Why can't people just keep it real and get along.. a new venue will only work for a short time as long as there are trashy drags, drugs and people with attitude. Something that puts alot of womyn off going to mixed bars is that "muscle queens" take off there shirts, being all wet with sweat come and rub all over you.. YUK.
I hope someone can come up with some ideas for a cool club. Perhaps a survey on people's idea and what they'd like. Give people a say and you'd be suprised. Keep it Real :)

^^ KK's brother - according to the article on gayqld
it's difficult getting a club up and running - before anyone starts being too critcal they should attempt it themselves first. i can tell you that there are many pitfalls along the way to success and i'm glad to see that this club is well funded and has a good relationship between the promoter and the owner.
running an event or a club is not an easy thing to do, and yeah, there are many things that drag our events down but drugs, alcohol and a reputation for inferior drag acts are only the tip of the iceberg...

I am with you there Kylie .... My b/f and I toyed with the idea of opening up a club in BrisVegas but the work and effort involved in it was HUGE!! Then there is the risk factor of "Am I going to make any money from this?" It was a dream that never became a reality and I admire Gavin and his brother for their courage to open "Rainbow Planet" and wish them well in their venture.
It is impossible to cater for everyone's taste, all you can do is to provide a great venue and atmosphere for people to enjoy themselves in, and hope that your guests behave in a classy way to keep the mood uplifting regardless of what they are on or how they choose to dress.

drugs , bad drag, and attitude seem to be very prominent in gay bars...
its sooo tragic...
i can honestly say that i have only ever seen 1 drag act in bris of late that was entertaining ( they were PMT.. great act) but the days when Toye DeWilde was performing were so much better... and she sang live... try to get one of these tragic **gender illusionists** to do it (( PSSSST heres a hint... your a gender illusionist.... WHAT female looks like you freaks... or behaves like em... disgusting)
i would say that bexter has the right idea... couple pool tables.... a bar where you can pop in after work and have a quiet couple and a game of pool.... a friendl;y bar ( melb has wuite a few... surely bris can handle one)
not like sporties .... arggghhhhh filthy place
or wickham.... ** oh im sorry you dont fit the look** pffft.... what look... drug f'kd, drunk. ambiguous gender look....
well thast a bout it...
funny how str8 clubs treat ppl better and are CLEAN
anyway thats my whinge for the day..lol
ps.. i know my lad and I would enjoy going to a club/bar ;like that... and if we decide.. stay on late for a boogie .... ( oh my is that showing my age)
bris is drowning in mediocrity as far as gay venues go...
;)
ps.. bexter... i enjoy mixing with all my gay family when out.. s o would be more than happy to ask you for a game of pool... just dont whip my arse too quickly ok... hey im gay.. my wrists a re week.. thats my story and im sticking too it
hahahah
peace all... and remember..... dont put down someone else... YOU may end up in their shoes one day

ok.. i find this quite absurd
Gavin/Kandi Kane - "I found the other venues on the Brisbane gay scene all seem to do the same thing musically and no one is really doing anything outstanding. We will be playing the mother of all music - house music. Different genres from the sounds of old skool to latin to progressive to tribal to disco to uplifting soulful vocals"
great.. so your doing something different by choosing a genre thats done to death and playing its sub genres????? god please save me
there are so many brillant forms of dance/electronic music out there.. its quite depressing to hear someone say a statement like the above...
play some Booka Shade and i might be happy
play some Pendulum and ill love ya..

^^ you'll definitely hear booka shade at cut and taste, along with m.a.n.d.y, audiofly, jim rivers, sebastian leger, mark knight, chris lake, klaas, and other assorted electro artists. and original compositions by our guest artist - jackie onassid.
we try to provide a nice variety of electro, tribal and more electro fringe acts. and we love the berlin sound...

Gold Coast (Not at Surfers, to hard to park etc), needs a gay venue that allow all gays/lesbians enjoy themselves. MP's is too noisy and too small. The venue should be able to cater for all types (young to the not so young), ie people to like to dance, quiet place to have a meal and drink , games rooms ie pool , pokies etc. Doesn't have to be upmarket, good food, drinks at a reasonable price... Is that to hard?

It is just a pity that the club will only be gay orientated on Sundays. We needed something simular for Fri and Sat. But face it, str8 people drink more and alcohol is where the money comes from to keep the doors of these venues open. I am still working on my ideas and listening to what everyone has to say. LOL!
I think what you mean to say is that there are a lot more str8 people out there then gay people...Not that they drink more alcohol...we are still a minority guys and girls...And in business sense a club isn't going to target a small niche market unless there is money there!!! They are going to target the majority...with the cash!!!
Brisbane is a small town too, I mean sure you feel that way but take a look at the crowd numbers...the beat is packed most fridays and saturdays... A club/event/club night will only survive if there are punters prepared to go there AND pay money for the privilege...
stupid uni assignments making me think business like!!!
Also Agree with hazy, what he basically said was we are going to do what everyothersadc*nt club has claimed to do...and end up just spinning MOS c.d.'s! Do we really need ANOTHER house club in brissy?!?
but don't listen to me, apparently I'm just a drug fucked raver...and wouldn't know music if it ate me! XD

I could not agree more with all of the posts about Brisbane and the sad state of choice we have.
Each venue has its charming features which we have grown to love or in some cases it seems from the forum walls, dislike.
What amazes me is how much as a community we don't demand change, but instead girlcot (boycot) a venue out of pure dissidence with the limited selection on offer. alternatively we give too much power to a select few that work against the status quo not to break the rules for the good of the community, but only as a tool for control and limited choice.
Some of us seem to head off the beaten tracks for entertainment that does not insult us as all being limp wristed, under aged, drones only interested in dressing like anorexia looking boy-doll facisimilies of Paris Hilton (or bad drag) gyrating to the same same selection of meretricious music from the likes of the usual repertoire of artist musical releases.
Each weekend in Brisbane we are faced with limited selections of men or women for our dancing cards, as the good ones are either a drunken illusion of smoke and mirrors, happily married or worst still playing up behind their lovers back.
While we push away the advances from these drunken ashtrays who have been propping up the bar since happy hour, in the process we try to enjoy ourself seeking out like minded company, the same same.
When all we want is to get a drink promptly, without the handy cap of being over 25 and holding a $50 note in our hand.
We might want to be able to dance on the floor without some snarly bouncer telling us we can't wear leather, take our shirt off or raise our hands in celebration to the latest Dreamgirls or Young Diva's anthem.
Has this time come? Can Rainbow Planet as a Gay night promoted by a Gay DJ, owned by his biological family, live up to proving a safe place that does not undermined the work of other community based organisations by being exclusive of all members in our community no matter what shape, size, age or colour of the rainbow they are painted?
I have to disclose that I am the communication designer behind http://www.rainbowplanet.com.au and as such I have an interest in this debate from a financial stand point.
But as an individual these thoughts are my own and in no way reflect the opinions of my contractor rainbowplanet.com.au these are solely my own thoughts and ideas, feelings and expressions about how I feel about my home town Brisneyland.
The time has come to ensure that Brisbane answers the current discourse amongst those GLBT people whom do want to go out for all the obvious reasons such as feeling apart of others, to be one on the dance floor, united and not divided.
A friend sent me an email recently that sums up my feelings "Some of us older folk aren’t dead yet! We still love a good time and hunger for music under 200bpm" I am looking forward to Rainbow Planet delivering the musical goods, the venue and the entertainment and letting the rest of us people do the rest... Have a really good time!

forgive me if i'm wrong, but isn't this club supposed to only be open on sundays and it's *ahem* not exclusive because straights drink more piss than gays?
anyway, i'll still come and check it out. content is king by me. not drink specials or guys dancing with their shirts off. but i'm wondering if this is pitched at more of a twink male than a mixed market anyway?

Kylie, yep the venue is straight on Fri and Sat, but queer on Sunday's.
Many venues on the scene are owned by heterosexual business men, I always try to remember that it takes two of them to make one of us! LOL
Brisbane will never be a Miami or Austin Texas, with a community large enough to support gay owned business women and men.
In the interium we have to shop at Big W (owned by Coles Myer) or Look for red light specials in the Club on Anne St.
Correct me if I am wrong but the sporties is still the only Gay owned venue around these days. Its been some time since I escaped Sydney and it takes a bit of time to work out whos what on the scene; made even harder when you don't go out that much.
Rainbow is Gay promoted by the Brother of the owner DJ Kandi Kane. Considering the venture is willing to support the gay scene and a music policy thats 'all about the music', its a breath of fresh air to finally see it happen, so they have my support.
When the club opens on Easter Sunday Tony Stella's MASS party with DJs Les Smith and crew breaking in the virgin stylis with some uplifting queer music. The crowd that attends the party will be totally amazed at the intimate space that has been created.
When the party ends at 8pm they can all stay on till 5 am with DJ Ty Dillion (syd), Kandi Kane, Mr Sparkles (Met) and Lok Lazy (Bris).
The venue is not for one particular scene, such as twinks. God love em, I was one once... LOL how soon I forgot, how to have fun.
Anyway I digress, the venue has booked a leading Sydney Phoenix DJ who is well know for his dirty fat house beats. This is for a long week end party later in the year.
They have already booked Rob Davis (Syd) for a hands down your mates shorts, knees up party sometime soon over a long weekend.
Two different DJs with wide depth of music section.
I would say from the face of it the management are serious about diversity in music selection and this should create a melting pot of different tastes.
It is a shame its not excluse queer fri and sat, but hey I can live in hope.
See ya on the dance floor, shall I place you on my dance card Kylie, for a Gypsy Tap? LOL

i dont think any gay club plays bpm over 200.. most modern dance ( which is what gay clubs play ) is around 130- 140
pop is even slower.. i think ive heard madonna, britney and the rest played more times in gay clubs than i could even count.. most of these come in 110-130 bpm
as for rainbow planet being the answer to everyones prayers?? im sorry but im not convinced..
Its an up market gay venue.. which means instantly it will be populated by the crowd who like to be seen at the newest venue. These are the people that everyone seems to complain about... the "anorexia looking boy-doll facisimilies of Paris Hilton"..
im sorry but a club that runs 1 night gay is not going to make a lick of difference in brisbane..
this is only my jaded oppinion...who knows, i might be horribly horribly wrong and planet rainbow will make everyone happy and bright and shiny..

Venues have histories especially Rainbow Planet being a heritage listed church, in its day it has had many incarnations, some good and some really bad.
Maybe we should get a sister of perpetual indulgence to bless the space and get rid of those bad spirits. Mother Hellen Highwater (as in through hell and highwater) would have done it, if she was still with us, god bless her soul.
It's rather fascinating that the promoters of MASS are hosting their party in the venue from 2pm - 8 pm.
Which leads me to a story about some important scene queens slagging off the venue for being just 'a druggy day club tarted up', LOL they obviously have not been inside yet.
They were asked if they where going to Mass this year ,
"Oh yes most definitely we wouldn't miss it for the world, we are always invited to Mass"
Then this fella told them, "well guess what its being held at Rainbow Planet", the look on their faces said it all!
Shocked and in awe of the dichotomy in the statement they just made.
This blunder only proves several things, we all have opinions just like arseholes, it does not matter if you do or don't like techno, trance house, or this club over that club.
The issue here is do we undermined something because it is different and not the same as us, or does this community set a standard in embracing change, choice, freedom, indifference to be who we are and who we want to be, and not to follow blindly like sheep the latest pop cultural trends. If (as a community) we continue to be filled with such hatred and disdain and not to accept difference how can the leaders of this community set the standard of tolerance when they them selves are such nasty drunken underminding and bad role models for younger members in the community?
The sooner we start to love our city of Brisbane for all its faults and benefits, from the physical space to the way we interact socially, as a community will never grow out of the big country town mentality, peering through the blinds judging others and not ourselfs firstly. It does not matter how bad a person you realise you are you can still change and make a difference, not through throwing money at chartiy as if its absolution for your sins towards the queer community. But doing deads that have no reward attached to them, something for the community that has a utility benefit.
Whats the sporties after the recent reno's "A local pub turned into a nice RSL club, with different sections of entertainment on offer and cheap yummy meals", but still its just the sporties, as is Big W, or Family for that matter, they are established and all proved services to Queer market segments.
Rainbows only saving grace is that its another choice and its new. Its up to them to make it an interesting space that is different to other pubs and clubs.
On a side note did you know that Auckland has more bars than us?
Seems strange doesn't it!
Rainbow may be the saviour for some in the community rising on Easter Sunday from the ashes of its drug den past, but for others it will be a blimp on their radar.
I am kinda not happy that Rainbow Planet is only on Sunday night and would welcome an alternative venue for us to select from on Friday or Saturday (so that we did not have to run into our ex boyfriends and play mexican stands off from across the smoking area until one of us leaves).
Maybe if we support venues they (straight owners) might see the power in the pink dollar and offer us the nightclub on Friday and Sat because money talks.

No doubt ill be there on opening night and see just how it all goes ( if they'll let me in that is ), Subwayray has been talking to me about this for AAAAAGES now..
i do find the queers of brisbane strange with their allegiances to clubs and pubs.. look at what happen to the alliance hotel because of some troubles..
Im actually quite happy with Brisbanes clubs, pubs and general scene.. either straight or gay.. people are friendly, drinks are still cheap in the good venues, there are plenty of places to go...
Then again im not the kind of fag for mega venues with 100's of druged up queer clones :) so im easy to please..

I'm really not a fan of commercial music...while I'm certainly not everybody...and definetly not representitive of the community on the whole... however there is an already large and growing segment of people who are turning to alternative music sources...
GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR DANCE PARTY ANYWAYS... :-)
It's nice to see the good old temple of sin (Boom) being used for something again!:)

I haven't been to any of the usual venues for years - for all of the reasons that have b een listed so eloquently by others in this thread. Now I am looking for somewhere a little more 'savoury' to go to meet some people of the same persuasion who aren't drug *&%^. Has there been any recent developments?

DAlli..at the risk of being unpopular...I think there is such an integration between drug taking and the gay club/scene/crowd that it is difficult to seperate the two especially in the twenteens-30's even 40's bracket. It's an entrenched part of how people go out to enjoy themselves.
I mourn the fact there are no non-drug-centric venues that still have a good vibe and a good atmosphere...I don't take anything, but go for the music and the atmosphere...

What about even maybe a 'venue' that isn't a 'venue'? I mean, like a coffee-house, restauranty, jazzy maybe kinda place?
Somewhere that's cool, relaxed, good vibes, open and friendly . . .

there used to be a very cool sunday arvo at a cafe over in new farm.. no longer happens anymore tho..
the thing is this kind of thing is easy to set up guys!!!! so if you have the time and the commitment you could easily approach someone and get one running

now that sounds great!! Different, fun, developmental, definitely the way forward.
So now it just needs to happen . . .
Where was the coffee thing happening? Is there something I'm not aware of yet?
