Mardi Gras Parade A Success

If that was a 'hugely creative parade' I hate to think what anything less would have been.

We waited in vain for anything mildly amusing let alone creative.

When the stand out floats are State Government and the City Council you know there has been a collective failure of creative imagination in the gay community.

It's 2010 so why the fuck are we still playing YMCA and I will Survive?

I was on the egyptian float and we were fantastic!

I think everyone went all out this year! was so good to see! Amazing outfits, make up an concepts. Well done everyone!

Only problem: 12 portaloos for 9,400 marchers just doesn't cut it! Why do they do this every year!

I really enjoyed the parade. Such a great energy from participants and onlookers.

The gay atheist float had seriously 5 people... I'm thinking i may have to forgo my shyness and support them next year.

One thing that did piss me off was the Osama Bin Laden float. I wondered about it's relevance and what possible message it represented. Because unless i'm missing something, it just appeared to be a totally uninspired link between a criminal 'hiding' and 'coming out' to what homosexuals have to go through. If that was it, then it really was pathetic, and frankly insulting to the severity and repercussions of his crimes that still effect many today.
An orchestrator of mass murder (although the Pope also falls in this category too) has no possible connection to the queer community. And more importantly, why would you want to go about making one? If anything, Muhammad would be a more appropriate figure.
Perhaps next year we should have a float for the Port Douglas Massacre with a larger than life Martin Bryant... and some how turn it into a message on safe sex.

The architecture who designed Sydney's Casino justified its simplistic, child-like appearance by saying it was created to appeal to people without refined aesthetics and/or who were drunk!

I'm sure it's the same for Mardi Gras floats. Pearls before swine! After all, 'Pioneer' and 'Mann' have both said the audience were drunk bogans who were whistling and applauding anything in front of them even if they had no idea what they were!

I was on the Camp-Berra float - first time poster and first time marcher ! wow so much fun so many smiling faces - one of our 'girls' got hit with a glass bottle while marching but the whole PDE was sooo fun. I didnt realise the pace..

ok, this was my first mardi gras parade that id watched. loved it, loved it.
i got into the city very late, like just before the parade began, and walked from town hall station, to oxford street. i got to hyde park at park street and started to walking through the people - it was a zoo!! it seemed that every 16 year old and 17 year old from the south west, south, and west of sydney was in hyde park. 3 times i got asked by drunken youths of middle eastern appearnce, "you wanna go,[fight] do ya?? and i was thinking to myself "is this mardi gras?? what the hell am i doing here??"
so i decided that i didnt wanna put up with this kind of unwaranted agggression, so i decided to leave. didnt wanna go through hyde park again, so i decided to go up behind oxford street to get back over east via padington. police said, "no, you cant get through here". so i decideed to try walking up oxford street to go home, and SO glad i did. as soon as i got onto oxford street. the mood, atmosphere, vibe, whatever you wanna call it, changed and went through the roof. the crowd on oxford street was loving the parade. happy, friendly, vibrant. and everything that the crowd in hyde park was not.
conclusion - hyde park is for the seething mass of 16 and 17 year old form out west who use a massive crowd to hide in from the police, and get drunk, agressive, and violent, and in some instances, downright homophobic.
oxford street is for people who actually care about the parade and the atmosphere, and having fun, and watching other people having fun. loved watching the parade on oxford street.
also id like to know the amount of foot stool related injuries ion that night - there were thousands of them!
after the parade i went to slide bar(basically cause it had the shortest line) enjoyed the happy crowd there.
left slide about 3 am and walked around for a bit chatting to people still on the street(so friendly).
then walked home via anzac parade, running into hordes of people coming back from the carnival at fox studios.
anyway. loved the parade and atmosphere. im gonna try and do it properly with organisation next time

The Rudd look-alike and the zombie hearse were some of my favourite parts of the parade. :) And our Egyptian float, of course. ;)

As one of the photographers, I thought everyone that marched did a terrific job and clearly had a good time - what more can you ask for, naysayers? It's easy to criticise from the sidelines. Don't like it? Get out there are do better.

I'm one of the organisers of Snatch&Grab, and as a younger group we were chuffed to be able to enter a float, and with predominately marching virgins. Our float may not have been anywhere near as "creative" as others, but for our girls it was about representing who THEY are and what they identify as... so it was a massive success and amazing experience for those that marched with our float.

Many a homo I know, could not be bothered with Mardi Gras or ChillOut, but are happy to stay home, so i ask Y not go and watch or participate? Their answer, to queer for them.... lmao... I couldnt help but piss myself laughing... :D I suppose one doesnt need to participate to celebrate hey!. :D

Ah, I should've clarified - there was no float; just a few platoons of bronzed Egyptians on a sacrificial march to the Studio of the Great Fox...some bearing miraculous and newfound abs. :p
