Bankruptcy

Ok, I know this might not be the best place as the laws might be different over here to what they are back home but I'll give it a go anyway.
When i left the Uk, I left a considerable amount of debt behind, it was under 20k and above 15k (in pounds!!) and now as my time over here is coming to an end my thoughts turn to that debt and Bankruptcy as the bes possible outcome to a rather messy situation.
Has anyone ever gone through Bankruptcy?
What are your thoughts on it?
