View Full Version : Valentine's Day - do you celebrate it?

Maybe it's just me, but Valentine's Day has never been a high priority within my circle of friends. Do you celebrate Valentine's Day? What are your thoughts? Revolting? Sweet? An excuse to pour more love into the world? Or plough more money into others' pockets?

Corey and I always do something special for Valentines Day...
Normally go away for the weekend or a quick and easy picnic, hmmm, looks like I should start making some reservations :P

I think that in our busy lives it is good to have a day set aside to think about our loved ones. I celebrate Valentines day with everyone that I love, just so they know that someone out there cares for them and that they are loved. Ahhhh

i'm not a fan of v day. if someone wants to show me they love me, they can be more spontaneous and choose pretty much any other day of the year. i'd much rather a random bunch of flowers or picnic or some other sweet gesture when it's not "expected".

well, as i am single i am hereby making it known that everyone is welcome to shower me with valentine's gifts (cash also accepted) in an attempt to convert me to the "i heart valentine's day" team.

yes and no really - we don't do pressies or anything - it's like everyone else is doing it so it ain't special, but we do cards and usually go out someone nice for dinner...

I agree with the whole sell out sentiment tho - if you want to give pressies, chocolates, flowers whatever, it's much nicer to get it out of the blue than out of obligation...

I love Valentine's Day!! Always do something with my special someone if I can. I hate trying to find decent cards though for a same sex partner. However, the brilliant author of our favourite lesbian comic 'Jane's World' has created some lesbian e-cards for Valentine's Day... check them out!! http://comics.com/ecards/html/janesworld.html

today i typed out the words to **when i first saw you** from Dreamgirls and then went and had oit laminated ( a handy walled size) so my lad can keep it in his wallet and pull it out when he want to have a quiet moment and think of US...

There are lot of things to do for this Valentine's day. I am planning to celebrate this Valentine's day by a romantic dinner cruise in sydney harbour..

In the afternoon I am planning to for helicopter tour in sydney as well as in Bondi beach..

Valentine's day dinner cruise (http://www.sydneyshowboats.com.au/harbour-events.html)can be something special that we can have in night , especially with the spectacular views of sydney harbour...

I don't think anybody truly 'celebrates' St. Valentine's Day.
They exploit it. Or ignore it.
Most guys exploit Valentine's Day just to get laid. That's hardly a 'celebration'. It's a tactic. Most girls go gushy ga-ga at the thought of receiving a gift on St. Valentine's Day to feel loved. That isn't a *celebration*, either - it's an insecurity.

I agree - random and spontaneous is far more romantic and exciting. Romance for the sake of romance on a set date leaves me weak and a little bored.

I love and hate Valentine's Day simultaneously.

What I hate is the commercialism and the reduction of romance to just one day.
Romance to me is a spontaneous yet complete giving of yourself to your partner/ love interest. To put a date stamp on it is pretty cheap and tacky.

What I love about Valentine's day- it kind of gives you permission to tell a random person that you like them with out anyone calling the police or accusing you of being a stalker.

This is important.

Valentine's Day is an affirmation for couples. Lovely.
Valentine's Day is a peacock- feathered display of *look at me, look at me* for singles. Hmmmm...

If you like someone, why feel pressured to tell them on 14th February?
Don't hesitate. Without fanfare or compulsion; without obligation or novelty. Spontaneously & without all the crepe paper & plush toys with *I WUV U* scrolled across them. Shit. Valentine's Day is the Homer Simpson of theme days. Dopey.
Be affectionate all year round, people. Valentine's Day makes people complacent. And that's dangerous!.....LOL

Not into any bit of the Valentine's Day hype........rather celebrate Sleaze Ball. That's were I met my boy - so every anniversary is getting trashed under the mirror balls in the Hordern.

Much more civilised......:D

I don't celebrate Valentine's Day because I am perpetually single. And perpetually bitter. I'd embrace it wholeheartedly otherwise - every day!

Don't really celebrate it. Did the first one just to be cute but we're not really into it. Might go down the pub and say happy valentines day in half asleep stupor when waking up, but thats bout it.

To be honest it was fun when I was single. You'd be all depressed n shit and one of your friends would round up a little group and we'd all go and get trashed somewhere and hate valentines day together. Usually got laid by the end of it too so it was good. Just an excuse to go out lol

Yes, I'm a big fan of Valentine's Day (were you expecting anything else from me though??).

I agree that unexpected surprises the other 364 days of the year are even better, but it's really nice to surprise your partner or friends (and be surprised by them) on Valentine's Day, especially when most other people seem to languish in their mopey mindset.... ;)

Only when in a relationship. I'm single ATM and find it isn't relevant, its a day for couples/lovers ect. My friends bday is one Valentines day anyways so we usually party but for a completely diff reason.

The only reason i get excited about Valentines day is becaue we have a mufti day at school each year, other than that i have no reason to celebrate or get excited about it.

Personally at my current age i find way for the huge companies to make more money, like commercializing Christmas and Easter.

It's a bullshit day and the original celebration was of Christian marriage because that is what St Valentine used to do when Christians were still being fed to the lions by the Romans.

I've had my heart broken on Valentines day. But other times its been nothing to me. I wonder how significant it will be to me this year as Chinese New Year falls around the same day and the guy who means something to me would rather celebrate the Year of the Tiger.
