I am not transgender so I dont understand the torment that these people go through - but I think that gay jokes about me are funny - and I can see the funny side when done in jest with me. I think people can be a little over-sensitive on some issues like this.

I think the episode crossed the line at a few points - but for the most part was respectful and fairly well worded.

anyone who takes offence to this is taking it to seriously and taking it way out of context. The show family guy is a comedy and Seth Macfarlane is known for his work (outside the show) towards gay rights, Now if it was K-Rudd or someone like that making these comments then people would be justified in getting the shits, but Family Guy is about brainless entertainment. OT, I haven't seen all of the episode in question, but it strikes me that Brian is a DOG. If a dog is offended by having had sex with someone who is tg, just maybe that is the joke? Personally I've never been offended by anything FG, or even South Park, has said about anything. These are intelligent shows that require you to engage your brain and not take things out of context, something most of those who scream offence summarily fail to do.

I dunno, how do you introduce the subject matter to characters like that and expect them to react any different. I found the whole episode quite surreal, it really just was a punchline pay off episode, but really I don't think in retrospect the ends justified the means. I think there was a lot of attempts to parody filmic conventions from an english speaking western ideal, but they weren't obvious enough and perhaps I am even grasping at straws drawing parallels between movies such as Tootsie and Mrs Doubtfire which would formulate Peter Griffin's ideologies on transgender. I think the underlying offensive message of the episode is "Trannies... even dogs throw up at the thought of sex with them", that's not a very nice message to put out there.

I guess they were just grasping at straws for storylines seeing as it is the 8th season and all.

Though it's still not as offensive/damaging as the entire run of Friends, and the Storylines surrounding the Ross Geller and Chandler Bing characters, if you want to demonise a television series for a blanket discrimination of alternative gendered individuals look no further.

i wouldn't be *furious*- not saying that i can easily put myself into a transperson's shoes. but i'm guessing i wouldn't be furious, and acknowledge that peter and lois's inappropriate giggling were part of a depiction of a bad attitude. at most it could be unhelpful and irritating.

but most of the rest of the clip was alright, kinda decent.

I went online and watched the whole episode courtesy of Crazzymikey to formulate my above opinions. As I said it is an accurate depiction of how the characters in the show would react to transgendered individuals.

You want to go make fun of marginalised groups of people go for it but it will earn you the same amount of respect as bashing up a homeless person and setting them on fire. Bullshit...visibility is a good thing but if it has to be at the cost of being openly ridiculed or patronised then it is a crock of shit.

I have the same attitude to shows like Queer-Eye, yeah there is visibility but it still hits home the point that Gay men (and women*) will only ever be good as the page-boys/help/staff or even that wacky eccentric co-worker but they are not allowed to be a sexual being like their hetero counterparts.

however I might add that transgender folk have had their share of being the butt of jokes since forever. I am sure some TG people will take offence and to keep ridiculing people who have been traditionally ridiculed for being who they are doesn't make things any better.

having said that, shows such as Family Guy are funny because nobody is safe.
