OK - we're in information overload about trying to find an accomodations in March in your town. We've "heard" that Melbourne is an "Industrial" city ... and not sure (1) if that's true, and (2) where those Industrial areas are - hence to probably avoid hotels in those areas... We're going to have a car while there, if that makes a difference.

We know that the Gay "area" is around Chapel St & Commercial Rd.

So my question to you that know Melbourne: in looking for accomodations, where are the better/nicer areas to stay without spending a fortune? Are the beach-front areas worth staying at - e.g., is the ocean water warm enough to swim in over march 7th? or too cold? We had a couple of leads in an earlier post, but they didn't amount to much yet. Any suggestions (for areas or hotels) would again be much appreciated. Thanks !!

I think Collingwood/Fitzroy would be a good option. It's the other (less yuppie) gay "area" of Melbourne and is relatively less expensive.

There are heaps of half decent places around the South Yarra end of chapel St - i'm thinking on toorak road in particular - just don't stay in the horrible place that looks like a deformed Windmill down commercial road near the Alfred - its vile

I wouldn't classify melbourne as an "industrial city". Anything but...I am a Sydney boy who married a Melbourne boy and used to commute between the two cities on a monthly basis, before mt BF moved to Sydney. From my personal experience I would stay around Collingwood, Fitzroy & Carlton areas. They have some great streets (Brunswick St, Smith St and Lygon St) for eating, shopping and coffee etc. Close to Peel, Laird, Club 80 and Wet on Wellington and very handy to the city - walking distance or short tram trip. Can catch tram or cab to Chapel/Commercial Rd area. Culture & Architure wise Melb has it over Sydney. But for beaches and the harbour Sydney has it over Melb. And friendliness of people I would definately give it to Melbournites . Enjoy your time down there.

My sister stayed in South Yarra (Quest Apartments?) and couldn't sleep for the thumping of the nightclub next door, so there's something to be said for staying somewhere quiet and catching a tram.
