View Full Version : Casual jobs

I am starting back at uni next week. I need a job. So I need ideas. I don't want to be bored, nor do I want to be poor. I want the holy grail of part-time student work - well-paid, flexible and fun. What could I do? What casual jobs have other people had?

Somebody hit me with a marvellous idea, or a cunning plan, please.

i think what you're describing would be hard to find. sounds like heaven. what jobs have you had before?

I was once a lawyer. Don't want to go back there. It is my last resort.

I was once a medical receptionist. I could go back there, although not keen. It's my second last resort.

I want to do something different. And lucrative.

hmm. no marvellous suggestions sorry, only a wish of good luck.

bartending? that's pretty well paid. and if you're at uni at day, it's a night job so it'll fit well. tutor? that pays decently.

i've got two jobs- party dj and sandwich hand.

Party dj sounds fun. I imagine it requires skills though.

I have added your suggestions to my list. Maybe I will just pull a job out of a hat. I though bartending pays quite poorly though?

What to do, what to do? Somebody please hire me. I'm literate and I have all my own teeth. I smile bright smiles.

Would anybody care to pay me simply to exist?

oh no, party dj is not fun and does not require skill.

well maybe it depends on where you're hired? my friend got paid $18 an hour. which is decent, since my other job pays me $8.80, and we're the same age.

let's make a company! selling....false hope.

Usher !

sorry realise this is the ladies room :)

Was an Usher/Cashier/Candy Bar/Bar person for 16 years. I made some life long
( well so far ) friends from the job. Although today its a lot different but try a suburban cinema as the big ones a mental. OK pay , you usually get free tickets to movies etc and lots of Uni students do as most shifts start 5-6pm and hopefully there are no late sessions so you still get to bed at a reasonable time.

stripper. requires little skill, pays extremely well. can be done out of school hours. a healthy smile is a plus.

pho, that sounds like an excellent plan, except that i think hillsong has a head start on us. as do the advertising industry in general. Can we come up with some new variety of false hope to peddle?

No apologies required :)

I like the sound of cinematic employment. It sounds glamorous. I'm imagining myself in 50s evening wear.

Does it really pay well? And does it really require little skill?

It's been more than a decade since I did anything like that, but yeah, it pays well. skill... notsomuch. a little flexibility goes a long way though. mostly, you just need to be able to have that "god, I'm a horny crack whore and I want it now" expression on your face. though if you find a fellow lady to do a double act with, you can basically just make out with your girlfriend on stage and get paid for it.

yeah I agree with faerie. Stripper, prostitute, exotic dancer, phone sex operator?

faeriegoddess

phone sex operator is another good one. you can do it from home, while you're studying. but not as lucrative.

My list grows.

I wonder if anybody would pay me to think up imaginary creatures. A rabbit with an elephant's head. A duck that growls. An empathic chair. I could write little case histories, and name them, and they would be your imaginary pets.

if you manage to sign a production deal with Mattel, then yes.

children's party entertainer?
pet groomer?
tour guide?

pho3nixphir3
26th July 2010, 12:17 AM
children's party entertainer sounds like the worst job for me. i wouldn't mind being a pet groomer, after i got used to being peed on/scratched/growled at. being a tour guide sounds decent, you could do it around your city for tourists- saw an ad for it ages ago.

I dont know if this has been said yet, but bar tending (in a good bar/club) is fun, it's flexible, well paid (specially night shifts)

I agree. Go for night club type bar work because the tips are really good. The shifts are long and you'll lose your weekend though... but you are studying and it will give you more time for that.

Some kind of spiritual guru/advisor (Deepak Chopra style) seems to be a pretty easy & VERY WELL PAID kinda gig.

The fact you studied law should enable you to push the boundaries only 'so far' you don't get into trouble for giving dodgy advice. I suspect you may have to broaden your horizons to other continents though, Aussies aren't quite as gullible as some other nationalities......perhaps a regular spot on Kerrie Ann would maximize your 'target audience' down under.....

PS - I'm pretty sure a good % Deepak Chopra type followers would also be up for the imaginary animals as 'imaginary pets' syndrome & part of with cashola for the pleasure.....

Worth a shot??

oh, that's a great idea, BlueGirl. You know, just before he started the Church of Scientology, L Ron Hubbard was quoted as saying (paraphrasing from memory) "the best way to become very rich is to start your own religion"

children's party entertainer?

I work some weekends for a petting zoo (no, get your minds out of the gutter!) at kids birthday parties and such, its awesome! Quick cash for like 4-5 hours. Cute as animals too.

Such a lesbian.

cilipadi
26th July 2010, 05:58 PM
That reminds me that I used to supervise children's pool parties when I was at school. Dash, how did you get into animal parties? and is it lucrative?

Bartending seems to be a favourite here, although my problem with that is that I have another job for which I have to get up at 5 am. I anticipate distressing circadian rhythm disruptions.

Somebody suggested modelling for life drawing classes. Apparently this pays well, and has the advantage of allowing you to sit around woolgathering. Has anybody ever done it?

anyway... although I have sent out urgent pleas to the universe, it appears that a job is not going to fall into my lap. Maybe it is time to go and look at job websites.

If only becoming a spiritual leader were a viable option. BlueGirl, if you care to organise a cult for me, I would make an excellent figurehead. We could split the cash.

Another thing I would like to do is introduce a hereditary aristocracy into Australia, and make myself a member of it. Then I could live off the income from my property, and oppress my serfs.

faeriegoddess
26th July 2010, 06:26 PM
cilipadi, I already have a cult following, and so far, it's not all that lucrative.
life drawing modelling is good money, but it's not a walk in the park. just sitting still sounds easy, but after you've been in the same position for a few minutes, your muscles ACHE. it can be very painful, especially on a long sit. not that I'm saying you shouldn't do it - I think it's a great idea!

cilipadi
26th July 2010, 06:40 PM
oh, so you've done it before? Do you have tips? How do you find a job like that?

I could deal with achey muscles. As long as the room wasn't cold. It would be nice to have a job that doesn't require me to serve people. Keeping still... yes, I could do that. Professional immobility.

What do other people look for in a casual job (as opposed to a career)? I think my top criteria are flexibility, lots of money, and no stress or tiring interactions with random people. I just want to get it done and get my cash, so I can devote my energy to my lovely friendly books.

I think my one exception to the interaction embargo would be working in a bookshop. I have always wanted to do that. But everybody does, so I will not even bother, because there will be no jobs and I'll only get my heart broken.

faeriegoddess

I think the best way to get life modelling jobs is ask around at art schools/ universities.
I do it at my own life drawing class - I model every now and then in return for cheaper lessons.

.

I wouldnt say lucrative, its about $20 an hour for 4-5 hours. I love it as its so different to my 9-5 job and I get to hang with baby animals! Yay..

Where are you based? If you are interested in getting into it they (all these types of places) are always looking for people.

Try looking for work at the university. You save time on travelling between uni and work, and they are normally quite flexible because they know you are a student.

When I was at uni I worked as a note taker (both handwritten and electronic for Deaf students), and as a psychology tutor, and coordinated a class for students learning English.

Approach your university's disability support service and see if they have any support work available - students with disabilities require note takers, people to write in their tests/exams, transcription, etc.

Could you tutor some first year law students? From what I hear over here it pays about $80 a session, which is an hour tutorial a week and a couple of hours prep (if you did it..)

What are you going to be studying now? Maybe there's a fun job that will be related? My housemate is a mascot for his footy team when he's notworking for a bank, but that may not be to everyone's tastes!

Well, I work in retail, which is kinda shitty but I love the store I work in. Other than that Bar work is probably the easiest to get into
