Well I suppose "candy ass" Wickham music is different to tribal or alturnative "pots and pans" music but really is there any need to be negative or slag off about music style. Everybody has different tastes in music. No one style is any better or any worse than the other. Being a musician Hazy you of all people should understand that. Music is there to be enjoyed the way you like it. :) :)
hazyinseptember
2nd February 2008, 10:03 AM
actually.. being a musician, i see that music certainly has a value... just like anything, some music IS better or worse than others..
the thing is the 'value' is a very subjective thing.. and this is where it all comes down to personal preference. its called having an opinion - which is a healthy thing
so while you dj the music you consider having a 'value' and call alternative music 'pots and pans' ( because you don't value its worth ), i consider the music i like to have 'value' and some other music i just don't like..
really it as simple as that.. this is why there are music critics !!!
nobody LIKES everything, and there is always a need to say " hey, this is not what im into", if people didn't do that then changes like whats happening this year at big gay day simply WOULD NOT HAPPEN.
i hope this clears up any confusion :) :)

Yaaaaaaaaaaaay I can't wait for this ! - WOOOOO HOOOOO
pdunni
2nd February 2008, 10:08 PM
Yeah I can't wait either.
i have to agree with Hazy on the music issue though. Although the value I hold for certain types of music varies on my mood.
i am keen on this new part of gay parties, (MG and BGD) where they offer alternatives even though i usually only listen to 'candy ass music'.

this article is a little dated, but it does go into some depth about the influcene of crystal meth on djs and music styles at gay dance parties, and where the term "pots and pans music" evolved from: http://www.lifeormeth.com/potsandpans/4509269795
not sure if there are too many djs in brisbane who stick to that sound. it's more something that gets pushed in sydney i think... but feel free to correct me if i'm wrong
hazyinseptember
4th February 2008, 07:18 PM
lol... ok.. i find that article a bit hilarious...
i guess the writer of the ariticle has never heard of genre's like ebm, drum and bass and hardstyle.. all of which don't have the same problem with crystal meth as the gay circuit scene..
maybe we should be blaming gay men and their drug usage rather than the style of music the dj plays? and the fact that music evolves just as art does.. we cant be stuck in the 90's forever.. :)
pdunni
5th February 2008, 11:19 AM
I can't even remember hearing that in sydney as mentioned in the article.
I think the article is a major exaggeration of music styles devloping over time and changing as it has throughout history.
Drug use has had an effect but not as made out in that article. (in australia anyway).

I think the article is a major exaggeration of music styles devloping over time and changing as it has throughout history.
yep... that's the whole point of my post in the first place... it's ever so easy to over-generalise about music styles... i put it up there as food for thought, and i don't necessarily agree with the points the author makes either... especially about djs and crystal meth, ecstacy, etc... but it does kinda provide some insight into the term 'pots and pans' - whether the author has a good points to make or not.

6th February 2008, 08:32 PM
next time i pop a pill i am going to blame the dj.
i'd never thought about it that way.
thanks kylie!
kylierose
7th February 2008, 10:03 AM
why not... ?? i always do :0)
and then you can blame all those clanging noises from the sound system if you pop a dud one ;0)
btw: that's not what the article was saying - it was about the negative effect of drug usage on djs and dance parties, not how djs can affect drug usage by people in clubs and on the dance floor. so don't blame the person playing the music for your own choices!!
i don't totally agree with what the author was saying - but i have experienced times when a dj has hammered the dance floor with music and i've wondered if they've been under the influence at the time.... pots and pans anyone??

Realbrisbane, I agree with you and think the world is already a ugly enough place, who needs people like "notso" coming in and spoiling everyone’s fun...
"notso", your clearly making a bigger deal then it needs to be.. What do you suggest the organisers do in its place if you feel that its so unsafe to host...

Ummmm Jae81m if you read what I stated it was the fact that the event is safe and at no stage did I state that it was unsafe to host. I maintain that there is sufficent security as was quite obvious last year. The person who states and maintains it is not is the username of "notso".
Another reader of this forum made a comment about not having a lot of posts with some of the people involved in this conversation. Maybe the reason I do not post a lot is because I do not need to comment about anything unles I am interested in it or find that the facts as stated are incorrect.:)

hmmm, yep, makes sense to me.... i'm just curious that's all - at tropical fruits this NYs you wouldn't believe the number of straight chicks who tried one-liners on me and my girlfriend - it was actually quite funny in the end... so yeh, i understand how people can go along to GL events with innappropriate attitudes and matching behaviour...
and i'm not thinking your comments were misogynist, i just wanted to know what you were talking about.... *shrugs, and leaves thread*

I can't say I have come across straight girls not in the spirit at Fluffy. I have met quite a few and they have been nothing but fun to dance and chat with, they even didn't mind that i said their BF was hot.
As for seeing the 'A bunch of 5 - 10 girls collect beer cans with their feet which have been dropped on the floor and put them into a pile that looks like a birds nest' i look forward to this.. and may even make a beer can contribution of my own.
In fact I look forward to the event in general and the afterparty at fluffy.. It can be as fun as you make it..

hahaha.. you missed my point
sometimes on here, when certain topics are raised, you find that some of the most vocal people are ones with 1 or 2 posts..
i call them the "backup's".. the people who have been asked by other people to join and post to backup their friend.. ( send in the troops )..
this is not ALWAYS the case though, as some are genuine forum users who have just joined...
its also interesting to check out the "find more posts by" option.. it can bring up some very interesting correlation's on how people post :)

Dear Notso.... Wow you sound like a really ugly person i think you should get a LIFE and stop bagging out all the gay events which i might add that you go to yourself so if you are complaining about your safety then don't attend these events it's as simple as that, and if i were you i would watch out what you say especially if you are attending gay day.... and i think you should stop targeting people on this website....

I can't believe you are still going on with all this venom. Fair enough you have made your point and as have others. The more you rant and rave the less impact your arguement / opinion has. I have intentionally not responded to your previously misinformed remarks about me but suffice to say no I am not asscoiated with the venue or that paper as you so eloquently stated previously. My closest association with the Wickham was living with a former staff member from there several years ago. As you are so concerned about the event and the paper speak to the people involved instead making accusations on a online forum. It is amazing what you can achieve face to face without heated emotion.
Given your response so far you will no doubt come back on here again and again to give me and anyone else a spray that dares to respond to you.
I hope you have a great time at the event as I know I will and if you don't frankly I really couldn't care less.

20th February 2008, 07:47 PM
Ah notso, I really must agree with gaynproud's recent assessment.
Not being a frequent visitor to the forum world, I was interested in the amount of "traffic" this particular thread has generated. You certainly have the ability to polarise opinion!
However, as I scroll through all of the thread history, a pattern emerges!
What you dress up as objective criticism of BGD, Wickham, QNews (the list goes on & on & on) really boils down to quite plainly a subjective, contradictory and bitter diatribe of your own personal issues with individuals here within the Brisbane community!
I think we all welcome healthy debate on a wide range of issues facing the broader GLBTI community here in Brisbane however, your credibility in these debates diminishes on a daily basis as you continue your attack(s).
I'm sure all of the businesses & organisations you mention would welcome feedback to improve their offer or services (it business 101 after all) - alas, I think you're incapable of offering that!
You talk so passionately about influencing change, however I suspect you methodology causes the opposite effect with these organisations/businesses (should they have time to read the threads). So remains the status quo!
May I suggest a quiet time of inward reflection to see how you could perhaps improve your ways of communication so that you may help to commence the change you think Brisbane so dearly needs.
Alternatively, if it's all so bad, move!
Cheers!
(shakes head, moves back to the bar for another Martini)!

Hello Notso wow you really do have no life don't you??? I was not threating you, you probably wish that i was... but i was saying that you should probably not be bagging out all the gay parties it's not anybody else's fault that you're a used up dj i mean everyone has their time and i guess you're probably just pissed off THAT YOU DIDN"T MAKE IT BIG... And yes i love how to state your age compared to mine coz you don't know anything about me i don't play pool as you would love to generalize me and think you know everything because your an old fart i would love just to tell you that i've had lots of life experience i came out to my parents when i was 12..... and i wouldn't throw my bourbon and coke on you i don't think that you would be worth it hmmm i can't remember all the shit you were saying in that overly large comment but i think you should just get over yourself you prick and get A LIFE.... ohboo hoo who cares if Brisbane is boring at least my generation are trying to make it fun unlike some people and guess what you idiot all my friends are from your generation so before you make assumptions ... i think you should get your facts straight.... and yeah as i've said before get a god dam life you wierdo and stop thinking that everyone is out to get you... and yeah have fun at gay day even though you are ever yet so worried about your safety and i just want to know why do you keep on going on about drugs you weirdo if you are so hung up on them go out and get some....

Don't worry waterrat,
Big GayDay is probably even more fun than pride day (which is on June 14).
It's at the Wickham Hotel. They close the streets around it of and everyone has a great time.

Yeah it was pretty good. I just have trouble getting into the outside area the music was not loud enough and actually found myself having a ball inside the wickham although it was like 50 degrees in there..
Set up was better than last year and I found it easier to get around. I liked the tiered staging for people to dance on.
I find it extremely frustrating that about every 30mins the DJ is stopped and a show or artist comes on that is on a completely different level to that of the DJ. Eg. Les Smith was playing a great set and then Kate Miller Heidke came on. Granted she is a great talented artist but I was just not feeling it at all.
Fluffy after party was excellent. Not really packed like I thought it would be but busy still.
