View Full Version : What do i do? i've landed in melbourne and have no idea!
23rd February 2007, 05:27 PM
So i thought i'd start a little thread due to my own personal experience in the last 2 days!
I've just moved to melbourne from brissie - within 36 hours i've found a sharehouse, landed the job i wanted + start uni in another 3 days - and now i want to celebrate! But i know nothing about melbourne - i didnt know that after paying for a train ticket you then had to put it into another machine :S thus making a total fool of myself at flinders street station when i got off the train lol... and most importantly I don't know where to head out, who has a cover charge, when is the best time to head out - where the boys are and what kinda boys to expect, and also what + where are the different scenes? and most importantly what music? from - do they play the britney spears mega mix there (i cringe when i hear it) - through to - all out crazy house trance beats. ohhh and could you warn me personally of anywhere that puts on Steps "5,6,7,8" and the boys run screaming to line dance heheheheheh i saw enough of that in Brisbane!
So let me and all the others coming to melb know what to do, where to go and all those little things you guys know so well that'll make us look like little fools when we know no better! lol

I'd start on Commercial Rd. You wanna head about a block west from Chapel St (toward the city, kinda). You can ask the guys there where else to go. You've got The Market, which is a weekend nightclub. Music's alright, house to trance. Tons of half-naked boys, fuck all chix except for the most tragic and desperate fag hags you'll ever see. The Xchange (across railway bridge), i've only been there in the afternoons, it's kinda cruisy, trashy, mostly guys again. Diva (tiny hole in the wall bar), in the afternoons it's cheap beers and just a couple of guys. Evenings on the weekend there's dykes upstairs and drag downstairs. There's a few other cafes and bars all round there too that are either gay or gay-friendly.
The Peel is over the other side of town (get someone to direct you from Commercial Rd). That's alright on the weekends, two rooms of pop music and house music (kinda like just the upstairs part of The Beat). No drag, though. There tend to be more girls there than on Commercial, but not many more. There's also a clubnight at a Bar Called Barry on Thursdays called Q&A which allegedly is "alternative" but imho it's no different to any other gay night except the line out the front is ridiculously long and all the "bi-curious" emo kids hang out there.
I'm sure there are a few other places, but i think that's most of it. Don't expect great things... especially not if you like mixed venues.

Commercial Road is Melbourne's Gay strip - for girls and guys, however our club/night scene is quite spread out. As in previous posts about this subject:
On Commercial Road you have: Heaven's Door - a very clean bar [upstairs and downstairs] with Thursday Night called Lipgloss [a dedicated lesbian night], Fridays [coming soon] a retro night, and Saturday is huge - very mixed and extremely enjoyable; Diva Bar - drag, retro/camp classics - Wednesday night is particular good with Pussy Willow hosting and a whole heap of guests; Market - very mixed!; a little way down St. Kilda Road - only on a Saturday Night - is the Greyhound Hotel. Again EXTREMELY MIXED CROWD and one of the most popular and consistent venues on the south side - directions on www.atthegreyhound.com.au; Heaven@151 [Commercial Road] is a superb cafe/restaurant/bar and is open for luch and dinner Tuesday through Sunday - you wont find a friendlier place for both genders and all people. On the north side, the Peel would be my choice of nightclubs, however the Opium Den has a drag King evening every Thursday, and is now open 7 days a week - very friendly environment - also the one venue catering to the needs of our Asian brothers and sisters and those who support same - but not exclusively. The Opium Den also boasts some exceptional Cabaret on a Saturday night. The Yorkshire Stingo Hotel [corner of Langridge and Hoddle Streets is again very mixed and a great friendly environment - from the front bar to the beautiful dining room and a fabulous beer garden.
There are, in fact, many bars, clubs, cafe and restaurants spread throughout Melbourne. I would suggest picking up a copy of the ALSO Directory which lists a majority of same.
Melbourne in general is inclusive. Night life is what you make of it. Go out with friends or most Melbournians are friendly enough for you to go out on your own and make friends very quickly as well. Enjoy!

i just spent a weekend in melbourne and had a ball... if you like fluffy you'll probably like 'love machine'... check out the peel - pretty trashy, but i had a ball when i went there... think it was a friday night. everyone seemed to be having a good time... music was pretty pop focused. lots of handbag from memory...
take care of yourself and best wishes for your new start in australia's culture capital. go hang out on brunswick street - by far one of the coolest strips in australia in my book. love it there!

depends on your tastes but there is leather and bears at the peel, twinks at the exchange, muscle boys and all sorts at the market, but melbourne has a thriving bar scene and is very inclusive - i ahve met people at transit, madame brussels, the gin palace - just depends what you are looking for and how gay you want your experiences to be
cheers and hope to bump into you somewhere

hi philandering, all those posts are pretty much on the money except for Alison's generalisation of females in the market on a Saturday night. They're nice and friendly.
I've just moved to Sydney after living in Melbourne for 30 years. From the sound of your profile, I think you would love the Prince of Wales - it's metro boy city with a heap of confused boys within who love to dress the part. The music rocks - a selection of cheesy house and electro - John Course is a resident DJ, as is Grant Smilie from TV Rock.. huge place down in St.Kilda on Fitzroy St. Also check out Greville St's Candy Bar on a Sunday before heading to Love Machine. Oh yeah, and Strike bowling sunday nights from 6pm too.. plenty of young ones there too. You're going to love it. Make sure you get to Raw Hide for Queens Birthday weekend, it will be a great intro to Melbourne's gay scene. Enjoy.

the Melbourne gay has many more youngers in it than in Sydney.. you'll find the youngs ones at Xchange on a Friday, Diva on any night and Saturday at the Market. Happy hunting.
