Someone in the Brisbane forums was complaining about "gender Illusionists" and how its pretty much become same-same ( pun intented )..

Why are there no drag performers in australia doing something interesting and out of the norm? why are they so obsessed with mincing and lipsynching the same way its been done for the last .. god knows how long?

and why do we watch it, bitch about how boring it is.. but then go back again next week to watch it again?

I remember in my few trips to sydney heading down to a bar called "Gilligans" i think, and seeing a drag queen band peforming, ACTUALLY SINGING AND  PLAYING INSTRUMENTS!!!!

now thats entertainment..

I think you're just trying to be controversial! :)

me? :D never...

well it wasnt intentional anyway..

i guess i just like to question things, especially when they are part of culture or society, and just ask why we do it.

I've never really "felt" the drag thing. There are a couple that I like, but I've never gone out deliberately to see drag. Sometimes I think the whole concept is a little dated! But then I just bitch-slap myself back into place.

if you don't get the context of drag then you obviously wouldn't understand why it's prevalent in the community, what it means. in being bad, it's actually GOOD. you don't need to play instruments or sing - that's NOT DRAG.

oh really? so the best drag queens are the one who cant remember their songs, cant dance, and look like shit?? i think not..

good for comedy value maybe.. but certainly not good drag..

drag is acutally the term used to define the act of performing dressed in the opposites sex's clothing.. so playing instruments and singing is quite acceptable as a DRAG PERFORMANCE...

you should read this.. wiki def of DRAG QUEEN (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drag_queen)
wiki def of DRAG (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drag_(clothing))

Drag's appeal or dislike, like all forms of entertainment, is in the eye of the beholder. I have seen exceptional production numbers like Mitzi and co., at the Imperial [Sydney] and Amanda and co., at Pink [Melbourne], I love intelligent drag [Pussy at Diva on a Wednesday night], and also drag that takes the piss [out of themselves]. I dont necessarily go out specifically to see a drag show, but if something is on that I like, then it is a major bonus.

I also adore the Theatre - God bless Melbourne - performance and vision art, stage shows, plays, musicals and the like. I also, on occasion, enjoy karaoke [good and bad].

If you place drag in the overall context of another form of entertainment, then you should enjoy it for what it is - warts and all. If you don't like the specific performance your chosen venue has on, you can always choose another room in that venue, prop yourself up at the bar and drink :)

I've said it before...and I'll say it again: Viva la Difference.

Sometimes you have to go outside the 'regular' venues to find the best. If you missed her 2005 Mardi Gras show "Girl With A Pearl Necklace" (and I believe Midsumma and Perth as well), you should really check out the amazing Varla Jean Merman (the *ahem* illegitimate daughter of Ernest Borgnine and Ethel Merman) at the Sydney Opera House next month:

Not only is she very funny and a genuinely good singer, her party trick is to squirt an entire can of spray cheese down her throat while simultaneously singing coloratura. Quite disturbing...
