Hi all - I'll be coming to Sydney for Mardi Gras from the US this year, and wondered if the official Mardi Gras parties are worth the price. I'm traveling solo, and don't mind going to big dance parties by myself but wanted to know what the locals think the must-not-miss ones are?
Thanks!

Sorry no one replied to you earlier:

My party observations:

Official Party - can be a bit ho-hum musically but you can meet some fun people. It will have a better punch this year being put back together with the parade. Usually the shows are a highlight (usually at midnight, 3am, 5am and closing) and predominantly in the RHI. The issue with the RHI is if the party isnt firing it can feel a bit lame being such a big venue. There are three others - Dome, Horden and The Forum so you can move round a bit.

Toybox - probably the best party to go to, but unfortunately has sold out. They launched sales on the 24/12 and it was sold out by 4/1. Sunday from lunchtime till 10.

I havent been to a Homesexual afterparty so can't comment but others say they're quite good. Sunday night.

Harbour is on the weekend beforehand - great location, popular with internationals. Being outside it is subject to the weather, and policing tends to be heavy at this event. They've combined with Daywash this year, Daywash parties at Chinese Laundry are fun but will be interesting to see how it translates to the outdoors.

Top is a new party this year (also sold out) at the top of centrepoint tower on the Friday before the MG weekend. I have tickets so hope it goes well - Dan Murphy and Kitty Glitter are my kind of DJs.

This year is make or break for NMG - they lost $500K on last year.

yeah missed yr post as away on holidays.

For an overseas visitor definitely go to the big party.

Over the years have had many overseas visitors and they cant believe the parade
and the party with all the different halls etc.

Sure can be ho hum but NMG will be going all out to hopefully get back support after a major stuff up last year.

Already sounding good and can bet they will announce big names who will be appearing.

Just the vibe walking around the halls is a major buzz. After 25 years of them I still get a buzz from it all.

Thanks for the messages. I am going to the big party and even splurged on a ticket for a reserved seat at the parade at the GlamStand. I'm looking forward to it!

Enjoy.

The Glamstand is a great way to see the Parade. Not something you do every year but did it when they first started and you could get up and move around then return to your seat without losing it.

And the party is the go. You will be all buzzed from the Parade and you just walk up the road to the Party.
