Actor Heath Ledger Is Found Dead
By Sewell Chan

The actor Heath Ledger was found dead this afternoon in an apartment building at 421 Broome Street in SoHo, according to the New York City police. Mr. Ledger was 28.
At 3:31 p.m., a masseuse arrived at Apartment 5A in the building for an appointment with Mr. Ledger, the police said. The masseuse was let in to the home by a housekeeper, who then knocked on the door of Mr. Ledger’s bedroom. When no one answered, the housekeeper and the masseuse opened the bedroom and found Mr. Ledger unconscious. They shook him, but he did not respond. They immediately called the authorities. The police said they did not suspect foul play and said they found pills near body.
Mr. Ledger, a native of Perth, Australia, won acclaim for his role as a co-star in “Brokeback Mountain”, a 2005 film. The film, based on a short story by Annie Proulx about two cowboys who fall in love, won critical acclaim. Reviewing the film in The New York Times, the critic Stephen Holden wrote, “Mr. Ledger magically and mysteriously disappears beneath the skin of his lean, sinewy character. It is a great screen performance, as good as the best of Marlon Brando and Sean Penn.”
Calls by The New York Times to Mara Buxbaum, a publicist for Mr. Ledger, and Steve Alexander, the actor’s agent, were not immediately returned this afternoon.

He joins River Phoenix, Kurt Cobain and many more incredible talented artists whose lives are tragically cut short by drugs. A real waste of talent...

I'm surprised to be honest. He never struck me as being the 'drug problem' type. You certainly never heard anything about it.

A huge shame. His part of playing the joker in this summers batman movie will now take on a whole new edge.

The media are hypocrites!

no sooner when the news were out he was dead they started rumours whether Heath committed suicide. How insensitive!

I wouldnt say his death was due to a "drug problem" It appears it was more of an accidental overdose which is very easy to do with the right type of sleeping pills, especially combined with pnemonia as he was allegedly suffering.

very sad !

Yeh, barbiturates are a little scary, you're really only meant to take the right ones for the right conditions and lethal if combined with other drugs and illnesses. It was an easy mistake to make..

This is terrible news. I've always been grateful that Heath chose to take the Brokeback role, because I really think it has changed Hollywood attitudes. Other actors are starting to be less scared of gay roles because of its success.

A horrible loss. As everyone is saying he died in his prime. He was a wonderful actor and a great example of Australian talent.

I just heard the most disgusting thing. I read on yahoo answers and confirmed it on the church's website that Westboro Baptist Church (god hates fags one) will picket Heath's funeral. How sick are these people ... http://www.godhatesfags.com/written/fliers/20080122_heath-ledger-brokeback-mountain.pdf

I only hope that something happens and they are unable to enter the country.

I agree it seems the 'drug overdose' hollywood theme is an easy denial of underlined dysfunctions in the industry that leads to depression for many...

Condolences to his loved ones and the many fans and colleagues that will miss him...

Respect to him, he was such a good actor. I loved him in Candy and in Brokeback Mountain. Would've loved to see him in The Dark Knight

Genesis he is still going to be in the dark knight ... its in post preduction so they are just editing the film. Its going to be great. I think it will defiantly be Heath's biggest film.

The WBC have ruled out coming to Australia to picket Heath's funeral, but they will be picketing his memorial in Los Angeles...

The WBC are the most insensitive pack of S.O.B's I have ever encountered...

Very sad for Heath dying just as his career is taking off.
whether it be illegal or prescription drugs abuse will happen because of the glamorous image of drug use. Many young unfortunately will not be put off by Heaths tragic death instead it re-enforces the saying 'Die young, Die a legend'
