i ask this question because it seemed there were an inordinate number of straight women both on floats and at the party last week.

i know some of them are genuinely supportive of our community and a part of it.

but what about those young girls who just see us as a party community and don't care a thing about the politics (though there are plenty of gay men who think the same way).

I don't know what the strict definition a fag hag is, but I'm referring to straight women - the vast majority of whom don't know what homophobia really is.

I had two 17 year old straight girls on the float is was on next to me and they seemed to think the parade was just a party.

And then I saw even more straight girls at the actual party.

It really made me wonder what this "community" is really all about.

I don't really have to deal with fag hags, seeing as they don't tend to cling on to faggettes. Also, the gay community is so divided in Melbourne that apart from a couple of events, it's generally segregated into mostly female or mostly male. On that note, I have heard that it's easier for a woman to get into the peel if you're femmy and straight, and difficult if you're obviously a dyke or butch.

When living in Auckland, the gay bar I hung out at was mixed and there were a lot of fag hags there. It irritated me because it was difficult to tell who was gay. Also, I went there with my gay male friend and people always assumed I was his fag hag - even though I wasn't fat. Nobody ever assumed he was my hag fag or fag dog or whatever. There is no equivalent is there?

For real. They brought in this law to allow them to turn away "straight people" who were turning up, but really, it was to get rid of lesbians. An ex of mine and all her mates were butch and used to hang out there. As soon as the law was brought in they were blocked from entering. However if a straight girl is with a few guys she can get in.

There are a lot of male-only clubs in Melbourne. There is only one female-only event that I am aware of called "Pinkalicious". This is a monthly event that become female-only as seemingly a reactionary decision. No other Melbourne lesbian events that I am aware of exclude men. I prefer mixed events myself.
