View Full Version : A thread for the GLBTI canberra community

As there isn't a canberra forum, a couple of same same members have helped as they have suggested to post a thread for canberrans, which is what I have done. If you are part of the GLBTI community or are family or freinds of anyone that is living in or outside the capital, why not participate in this thread. It can be about canberra or any topic you wish to discuss, you can discuss it here as if it is a regular forum.

good move moviefan!
I'm not a Canberran, though I did live in Fyshwick for a while, some years back (don't ask). I just wanted to lend a supportive post to the thread. =)

forum does not seem to go beyond Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane.
not sure why?

faeriegoddess

no, there are sections for adelaide, perth and darwin... just that the perception of the average australian gay doesn't go beyond sydney, melbourne and brisbane.

yes well it is up to those in the area/state to contribute, maybe the fact is more about local influences.
Of which these states have none from SS.

I know for a fact your not the only gay in canberra :)

But keep at it and get some people together on here.. Its what i had to do to get a Brisbane Forum going...

It seems to be a ghost town of canberrans on the same same site of late. There seemed to be a number of us on the site not that long ago, perhaps alot of them had given up.

The other thing is that having a forum for a state does not instantly make it used either.. I mean check out the Perth forum.. its pretty slow.

If your really passionate about it why dont you rangle 10-15 of your buddies in and get them to post a request to open a canberra forum? Post it on your facebook or something maybe?

good luck!

*wave* I'm here.

Canberra does have a small but active community - if you're not already join the actQUEER mailing list - it'll keep you in the know.

An article related to gay hook-ups around the capital appeared in the Canberra Times recently:

Landmarks on gay sexcruise site

CANBERRA landmarks, public toilets and even a community centre gym have been labelled gay ''cruising'' areas by a website aimed at homosexual and bisexual men.

http://www.canberratimes.com.au/news/local/news/general/landmarks-on-gay-sexcruise-site/2163394.aspx

I find these types of articles which spring up every now and then to be a bit unnecessary. A commenter on gay Yahoo group ACTqueer agrees:

"While the journalist was responsible enough not to name the sites, the fact the editors thought this was newsworthy is appalling.

"This kind of non-journalism seems more reminiscent of 1960s witch hunts. The fact it was published just two days before the International Day Against Homophobia points to the need for ongoing activism and to never be complacent about the freedoms we enjoy, and that so many proud Lesbians, Gay men, Trans* and Queer activists before us have fought for."

Why on earth would they even publish this in the canberra times in the first place? Gutter journalism nothing more.

There were similar stories in tassie newspapers a couple of months ago that went on pin point exactly which parks, beaches etc that were known to be gay beats and encouraging anyone noticing any individuals 'acting suspiciously' to contact the police. However the locations featured in the story were also well known hotspots for drug dealing, hooning, vandalism and even straight couples having sex but those sorts of unsavoury activities didn't even rate a mention. Go figure...

FYI!

The AIDS Action Council is going to consult with men who have sex with men in the ACT by running a series of focus groups that will help direct the future of health & safety campaigns and advertising in the ACT. We want to talk to a range of people from the community.

Focus groups will start in June and take place at Westlund House. Dates and times will be arranged closer to the focus groups.

We will be running focus groups from June. Each focus group will last for 90 minutes and each participant will receive compensation of $50.00 for your time. This is an opportunity to influence our work for the next couple of years.

To express your interest, please e-mail Keiran on keiran@aidsaction.org.au and we'll be in touch with more information. Expressions of interest close Friday 10 June.

I sent this through ACTqueer but thought it might have a home here too :)

Hey Everyone,

So Canberra has done something cool for once, and there is an outdoor Ice Skating rink set up in the City for most of July.

I thought it'd be really cool to get a big group together to go out and maybe do some ice skating together and do our best Johnny Weir impressions, or perhaps earlier in the night if there is more interest for that.

The night session has lights and music, all disco style so I'm told.

Invite anyone you think would be interested ^_^.

You can buy tickets online to secure a spot in advance as there is no guarantee on the night. (check your booking time): http://starsonice.com.au/soi_web/events_sitc.html

It's $25 which is a bit more expensive than say Phillip, but it's not every day we have the chance to do something cool like this.

If there's enough interest in doing it, I might show up in Drag! Now that'd be a sight to see, Queens on Ice!

If no-ones up for it, I’ll be dancing on my own *tear*

Thoughts My Friends??

Mwah! ♥

The thing I find most outrageous about the CT article 1) their facts are wrong, in the ACT and surrounds there are 42 Beats (Squirt.org, May 2011) secondly there are 10 times more criminal activity in the immediate area around beats relating to drug use and traffic / hook complaints. This journalist is known for the articles she writes, and not in a positive way - they all have a sexual slant. The team in the office I was in recently described her as a ' Sex on a sunday morning, missionary style only' type... Interesting.. I did not want that visual.

Finally been checkng out some more of the site (only joined a short while back & don't get too much time on www).

I'm not a Canberran being in Cooma, but Canberra is where I head to hit the clubs & shop (sometimes) etc. Albeit, rarely these days. Does that count?

Kudos on creating the thread even if it does seem a bit light atm. Should get there eventually I hope.

Thank you for your response, yeah anyone is welcome to participate in the thread, including visitors or people who have never been to the capital are most welcome. Yeah it seems not many canberrans seem to participate in the forums much, but i'm rather surprised that the thread is still going, thanks to regular posters who contribute, hopefully it does pick up later on. :)
