I went to ARQ on sunday morning just gone & I have noticed one very concerning thing .... The people were all very edgy - everyone was looking around & if you made eye contact with anyone they started to give quite aggressive looks back ... Maybe It is 'cause I haven't been there for some months (on a Saturday night) BUT I can't help but think it is the different kinds of chemical people are into .... Ice, Like Hammer really is a chemical that can take anyone down... Like heroin not many people can remain non addicted for very long ... to Quote Boy George (I'm reading his second book @ the moh called STRAIGHT) anyone who kids themselves that they will remain in control for their drug taking is 'As honest as a vegetarian butcher' .... They world over esp. USA, NZ & Asia all have a problem with this insidious chemical. A mate of mines friend in NZ was convicted of Murder - He can't remember a thing, & he was high on ICE.
Clubbing used to be about enjoying music, dancing and that fun loved up feeling how ever you get it. That is not how I felt at ARQ and I am worried that this might start to be going out in Sydney in general. I did however have a great night earlier @ Phoenix at ACTION - Fantastic vibe, music and night - Keep up the great work James & Bruce - It's a winner in my book.
Peace to all in club land & let's bring back the Love.

I haven't got much to add Genkij, except to agree. I did try it about 6 years ago on a couple of occasions, but found the day after to be just too hard. I can't handle that alert-awake-wired but blank feeling you get - too depressing.
I've got a copy of the film "Meth" which I'm reviewing on the site as it's about to screen here at the Melbourne Queer Film Festival. What I've seen of it so far is too scary - all of the ex methheads/iceheads that they've interviewed are now HIV positive, from having unsafe sex on the drug.

arq is revolting. it's not even gay anymore on a saturday night - overrun with straights, not that i mind straights in gay clubs, but it's gone beyond that. it's the gross straight element, the one with zero respect for where they are, who get so fucked up on drugs that they don't even know their own name. everyone gnashing their teeth, escaping their problems - i vowed ages ago never to return to that place and i think it's a promise that's gonna be easy to keep...
i agree - action/phoenix is hot, cos people are there for different reasons. such a different vibe, a much more genuine community feeling, hotter music and a sexy space... people are turned on rather than tuned out. i went on the weekend and heartily endorse it. if you haven't been - GO.
as for ice - well, like anything there are people who can't handle their drugs. i am not saying it isn't addictive, i've tried it a few times, i know what it is like - i guess some people can keep things on an even keel and some can't.
i'm all for a few drugs now and then - i do enjoy them and hate it when everyone gets all sanctimonious about them - but i do think some people are just too useless when it comes to keeping it under control - they give those of us who can a bad name.

That's so sad that Arq has gotten so straight (sorry to change topics). It's such a Sydney thing - I can't imagine one of the big gay clubs down here in Melb like the Market or Peel being over-run by straights, although the g&l crowd at Market sometimes have to content with having a straight club across the road that doesn't always attract the nicest crowd. Isn't this just DCM all over, which was the hottest gay club in the early '90s, the trashy straight Euro muscle crowd move in, and the gays move out?

Is it the pink dollar becoming less discerning ? ... I actually think it might just be that a lot of younger queers just hang with their Peers more (OMG I'm a poet n' didn't even know it !!) > all a product of what the entire Mardi Gras political thingo was all about innit ??
