Anyone out and about there? Besides the ones I hear about that are entirely degrading.

Born and bred for 19 years, then I escaped. Half-yearly visits are all I can handle now.

Come to Brisbane already.
^ That! Also: I lived in Mackay until I was 18, I know what it's like, but there ARE things out there, you just have to find them i.e; http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=173707846346.

It sucks. The gay scene here is horribly slutty and gross like. I dare not affiliate myself with them, and all I want is a few good quality gay friends but I cannot seem to find any! Grindr is no help, well, it never was.

Grindr is not the place to be looking for genuine friendship. I was like you and did not really want to be part of the gay scene in Townsville but I only moved away from there in October last year and now that I'm here, I've been thinking that I should have moved years ago (I really should have studied uni here!).
Do yourself a favour and get out as soon as it's practical for you to do so. You may have reservations or fears about stepping into the world on your own but I've found that things have a way of working themselves out if you're kind of sensible. Even if you're not and you make a mistake. Whatever. Pick yourself up, learn from the mistake and move on.
tl;dr: move away from Rockhampton ASAP. It might be scary but it's worth it!

I'm sorry but I've developed alot of genuine relationships on grindr. I'm sorry if you've experienced different but it has helped me through a lot of patches of loneliness. And thats all very well said and done but it won't ever be practical until I finish my degree. No matter, I might find someone on the way - I'm quite used to being lonely. :)
To clarify, grindr hasn't ever given me a real loving relationship, just a few good quality friends though not in the same district.
