View Full Version : Ian Thorpe: A Gay Icon

Ian Thorpe has come out and declared that "I don't have a problem with being a gay icon."
Did we miss something here? There's a huge difference between being considered gay, which has been the talk for years, and being a gay icon (hello Kylie, Liza, Dannii). Is Ian Thorpe a gay icon to you? Do you believe what he says? Or should we all just leave him alone?

Ian Thorpe is NOT a gay icon..
he has nothing to do with gay culture..
he is (being?) severly mislead if he thinks he is..

He must be getting them confused but I don't think he can be an icon

Ian Thorpe is just irritating. Perhaps he just wants to be a gay icon now that his swimming career is over.He should stick to advertising breakfast cereal.

hmmm... ian thorpe is many things but a gay icon is not one of them. that's cute though, that he doesn't know the difference between being a gay icon and being considered a homo.
too many fragrances and pearl necklaces if you ask me (and i mean REAL PEARLS people. minds out of the gutter.)

isn't it great that we have people like Thorpie to talk about? and i think i agree with the people who wonder how he got the idea he's a gay icon - but maybe there just are enough people that think of him that way for the myth to have been "brewed" in the first place? my two-halfpenny worth is that if he isn't, we should leave him alone - and if he is, we should be offering nurturing, caring, feedback until he gets to the point where he sees something in our community that he can identify with and want to belong to... otherwise it's a sad indictement on us... shame! :)

Thorpie a gay icon - bullshit. I think he's been misled if people are telling him he is.
Gay? - whatever. It shouldn't be an issue, and if people want to stay in the closet that shouldn't be an issue either.

Just remember everyone, its straight media that interviewed him. Why would you admit it to them and give them the scoop.
If he is gay, let him tell us in his own time in his own way, just like most of us have had the privilege.
Gay Icon - he hasn't done anything for our community that would suggest such a title.
I say watch this space.........:)

I think he really is straight. Truth is stranger than fiction after all.

What's the definition of a gay icon anyway?? Is it someone that gay people talk about disproportionately? Someone gay people particularly like? Someone gay people aspire to become? Someone that gay people adopt because somehow it makes us feel better? Someone who gives gay people a disproportionate amount of attention?
How does someone become a gay icon? Is there some kind of committee awarding this status? Is it just a matter of consensus?
Are there more questions than there are icons???

Mr Thorpe is totally charming, and is always so careful to not be negative about comments around sexuality. Like hollywood stars, his public image is his brand, so he had to be careful.
I guess part of the reason some gay guys get so hot under the collar about his sexuality is that they would like him to be gay. I think he would make a great leader - How about Thorpe for PM?
Actually, I heard that Ian is in a relationship now with Tom Waterhouse
