Hi there.
I just got back from Cairns a week ago with my boy. We were considering staying at Turtle Cove, but after reading the numerous reviews on tripadvisor.com we decided against it. There were some very negative comments and all the reviews agreed with each other.
It seems very very expensive for what you get (a run down school camp).
I would recommend Trinity Beach - its about 25 minutes south of Turtle Cove (closer to cairns). Very, very good value accomodation - I stayed at On The Beach Apartments and it was fantastic. The owners did not raise an eyebrow at two 20-something guys checking into a one-bedroom!
BTW - Hire a car when you go - its essential.
If anyone has stayed At Turtle Cove I would love to know what they thought of it - I haven't heard one good report.

I really feel like i shouldnt be commenting.. BUT ..
i went to turtle cove years ago.. ( pre 2000 i think ) .. getting there was quite dissapointing.. the rooms were not very nice.. very overpriced and the manager at the time was a sleazebag who kept on trying to come into my room..
BUT.. the beach is stunning and you have it all to yourself ( or whoever you wish to share it with ).. there were heaps of very sexy and fun tourists from all over the world staying there... and the staff were fun and friendly.. the resort bus runs from the resort straight into cairns quite a few times a day...
I hear the rooms are alot better now, and really, there is nothing quite like staying in a gay resort...

Turtle Cove is very nice - its not fantastic I would dare say but its nice.
I can't comment on the rooms as we didn't stay there (we were in a vacation house up the road).
From what I understand the rooms are a little old & tired and rather expensive for what you get.
The staff there are fantastic though, the food is good (again a little pricey), the drinks are also a little pricey.
It has an advantage in that the beach is private - which I think its the only private beach in Port Douglas.

I've stayed at18-24 James St, now Skinny Dips.
But in those days (circa 2000) you could use the facilities of either resort.
Neither were all that good value.... but there's a great feeling of chilling with a bunch of gay guys, having a laugh in the pool and not worrying about the heteros getting annoyed.

i so have to try these places out... i am intrigued now. a gay resort sounds much more appealing to me than a gay cruise or something like that - at least you can get in the car and leave if you don't like it. or go lie on the beach or something...
the sleazy owner kept coming into your room? how odd!

Stayed at Turtle Cove on January this year and had a great time. Stayed in the Apartment that was the same price as the Beachfront units but with double the space. The units had been repainted & curtains etc upgraded from the last time we had stayed and a new manager, Ross, had started last year. He was good value and very hands on in checking with us at breakfast that all was OK.
I think that Hazyinseptember's post of 16 April may have refered to Bebees Tropical Apartments where the owner, Bill, had a reputation of jumping on guests. Bebees was the original gay resort that opened in the late 1990's but closed in 2002 from memory.
