great article steve! since being assaulted on oxford st last year myself i have been thinking about going along to self-defence classes... i mean, you can't put a price on that peace of mind... maybe we should get a same same group together?

Well..............I have been in this situation before.

I was about 19 when I was walking up Flinders st to my friend house. I walked fpr about 50 meter when 4 asian "gang" types stoped me and flicked out a butterfly knife and told me to give him my wallet and my phone. Me (completely off my tree) at the time told them to get F*cked. I was slashed across my torso (don't worry it was not as bad as it sounds). I started to bleed all over my shirt, I looked down at the blood and looked back at the asian kid and said is that all you got? They ran off. Mind you they did not get my wallet or my phone. I still have the scar today which I'll proberly show everone on the SS dinner. lol

Another time I was walking up oxford with my friends dress up of course. We passed a club which is now called the Milk Bar (I can't remeber the name it used to be). Bunch of wogs where standing outside having a smoke and as I passed by one of them said "oh look at you, you f*cking faggot". I turned around and said "look where you are dickhead, it's faggot city", he said "f*cking smart ass" and took a swing at me, he was that drunk, it bearly hit me, I reacted and clocked him one and busted his lip and he fell on his ass. I said "I may be a f*cking faggot, but I'll kick your f*cking ass"! The bouncer stood there and clapped. I walked off with my friends and made my way to ARQ.

There are my two experiances mind you drug fueld at the time.

I guess given this thread...something that might be worth being mindful about is sometimes the best handling of the situation is to just get out of it!

Where Anthony was able to "bluff" his way through those situations (and I don't mean any disrespect to you Anthony I don't even know you...my point is that what you said to your attackers may not work with everyone...especially where a larger group is concerned, the fact of the matter being there were still more of them than you), and if an altercation can be avoided it's best being avoided...and it is something that most self defence classes teach, which is exactly why they aren't called self offence classes ;)

i think at the end of the day sometimes you can't argue or fight your way out of things. but self-defence can't hurt.

Violence should always be the last option ... I've heard far too many stories in my short life of people defending themselves, their family and their property and they are the ones who end up paying large amounts of compo or (in some cases) going to jail.

On the other hand, like Christian said knowing some self defence can not hurt!

I'm with Anthony, I am 6'3 so noone really tries shit on me.. the one time they did i was in drag on oxford on the weekend... First time too!!

years ago i went to the aid of a guy who was getting bashed by a group on the corner of Darlo and William st, he ran off and left me with them, i lasted for a while then got kicked shitless,i was a teen sissy at the time.
