I read this interview with some interest. I like Peter Rauhofer's work, and really respect him as a DJ and producer (his first vinyl release album cover, it's worth tracking down for the quality talent that gone into the photo shoot). :p

But one of his comments gave me some food for thought:
“The gay crowd is way pickier than a straight crowd. They’re a lot more challenging to play to, but if they accept you then you know you’re doing something right.

Which set me off asking some questions:

Why is it that gay crowds are pickier than straight crowds?
Is this actually true? (From my experience straight rooms are easier to please...)
And is it because as a cultural set, do gay people only dance to a gay soundtrack, or is it something deeper than that?

Hmmmm........

i think you nailed it..

unless it fits into the ( their? ) gay cliche, most just are not interested and dismiss readily..

this is talking from a non dj BTW.. so i might be way off.. but being a musician i find that unless i mention Britney or Madonna most poofs just are not interested in my music..

i'd like to think we're a bit more evolved than this? i guess it depends where you go and who you speak to...

as for comments like 'gay crowds are more picky than straight ones' - i am always a little hesitant to make generalised statements like that. in many ways i think music on the gay scene has gotten stuck in some sort of groundhog day of unimaginative pop. we may have led the way once upon a time, not sure that's the case anymore.

again, differs depending where you go - i.e. venues, cities, subcultures... we're a diverse bunch.
