yeh its true.. im thinking of dipping my toes in the big and wet swimming pool of djing..

am i crazy? i think so..

ive been looking at simple cd dj setups.. jog wheel style ( not cd-js ) to play with at home... most of the clubs ive seen in brisbane use these ...

BUT

i was speaking to someone out at a pub last night, he's had some serious dealing with the big clubs down in melbourne and said i should seriously just consider doing Laptop Djing.. its what most clubs want..

and then i ask myself just why i want to start doing it anyway?.. yeh i love my music, but its not like im going to be playng anything that the average gay club will want to hear.. i listen to mostly dark electro... so my dj set would contain electro, breaks and some dnb probably...

sigh

i think ill go the software route for the moment.. im all setup for that.. but any advice would be great..

Don't stress about finding an audience. There are plenty of gay DJs who play "non-gay" music (though not necessarily to an exclusively gay audience).

Speaking as someone who isn't a DJ i think you should spend more time on learning your songs and finding out what works well together and creates a good journey. You can learn how to use CDJs when you have enough money to buy them - in the mean time you can learn how to play a set that flows, i reckon that's much harder to do.

If you are in Melbourne in June you should come to our party Different Drummer at the Glasshouse on Sat 16 June. DJs are Seymour & Gemma from legendary Sydney club Kooky and Phil Smart who was a biggie on the party scene in the '90s. We love electro. Only play vinyl myself (so far!)
