Black shirts, black dresses, black chesterfields and a big black horse with a lightshade on its head...

I went out last night to Will & Toby's, a new supper club on Oxford Street and it was very posh - the drinks are a little over-priced but it was nice. It got me thinking, is Sydney starting to catch up with Melbourne in terms of venues and cool factor?

I started an earlier thread on the death of Oxford Street........ and you know, I am not so sure. I recon there is life in the old girl yet.

hahahah Sydney is getting a bit more chic. I want them to fix up the end of the city near Market City. Needs a little more .... whats that word they use on 'Queer Eye'? But it definitely needs more of that!

I have the feeling Mosman is like Melbourne in Sydney but then again its just snob central and modesty is the key

As a Sydneysider living in Melbourne, I'll tell ya when Sydney will catch up and possibly supersede Melbourne:-

When they change the bloody liquor licensing laws.

Melbourne has had a cultural revolution since they were relaxed here in the '80s. I think that the way that people can relax / entertain / socialise really does affect everything else..

If you were there the night I was...... then you'd realise that the queens weren't interested in the food menu or live music by Courtney Act - they were too busy chatting away (loudly) in their tight Abercrombie& Finch T-shirts clutching their beers.

So, AussieG - Are Sydney queens more superficial than Melb ones?

Perhaps from afar - Sydney looks like hedonistic, we just lie on beaches, and do nothing. However, I think that Sydney is a workaholic city. That's probably related to the real estate values – you have to work hard just to buy a house here.

Hmmmm......

Well, I still stand by my orginal comment, that I think things are changing. I think that Sydney is starting to get a "cool factor".

I think that cool is actually cyclical - in other words, it comes and goes. How long a city or a club stays "cool" depends on whether it can be reinvented and stays relevant to its target market.

Why has Madonna has stayed "hip and happening" every decade since the 1980s? It's because the Queen of Pop is also the Queen of Brand Reinvention, Why can't Sydney, and Oxford street re-invent themselves?

Melbourne, you used to be cool........ but your time is over....

Haha, very good, but it's true. Sydney guys can't get past the coastal-casual look. Tell me where in Sydney you see well-dressed guys?
