"THE Catholic archdiocese of Sydney wants its 167 school principals, its deputy principals and religious education co-ordinators to publicly commit to a "vow of fidelity" by adhering to church teaching on homosexuality, birth control and women's ordination.

In a first for the Australian church, the Archbishop of Sydney, Cardinal George Pell, is set to extend the oath of fidelity and profession of faith, a requirement of church law for bishops, priests and heads of seminaries, to all senior educational leaders.

The oath demands "religious submission of intellect and will" on questions of faith and morals - even if these are inferred but not defined by the pope and his bishops - and an acceptance that everything solemnly taught by church tradition is divinely inspired.

It suggests they would be bound not only to impart these teachings but to live by them."

OK. I still go to a Catholic school and there are gay and lesbian cliques in the younger grades, this 'indoctrination' is going to affect them from 'early 2008' which is next year. This is going to result in discrimination against teachers, students and guardians. Do we Same Samer's have any opinions on this issue?

IN my experience I've never experienced any discrimination from my teachers or principal, they are very accepting of me and my openness about my sexuality. They also seem to be open to the notion of gay andl esbian cliques within both yr 11 and 12 These teachers and principal are practicing Catholics and they're acceptance is amazing as its f**king Liverpool for Chrissake! They also seem to be encouragers of us young G's and L's to stand up for ourselves and our rights, so will this new oath change all of that? That is what I'm really worried about? Will those G and L students have to go back into their closets?

Catholicism does have some positives-respect, care, concern, share, humility to name a few. The reason for Pell's decree is because Australian Catholics are independent thinkers, relating to their God directly. They have chosen methods of birth control, acceptance of the gay community, use of condoms for gay sex; all in defiance of Church teachings. The matter of acceptance is happening now in spite of Church teachings, do you really think that this order will put the genie back in the bottle? I heard the other day that there is second Reformation underway in all Christian Churches, more subtle, driven by the laity-take solace in this.
