View Full Version : How to get motivated to exercise???

Ok peoples, so Spring has sprung, winter kilos are stacked on (upon the existing kilos in my case!)...the time has come for exercise.
Exercise and I over the last 10 or so years have become like distant cousins...where once in my twenties I would think nothing of a regular brisk walk, these days (I am 38) my mind can think up every reason not to do so.
The exercise bike I bought during "The Biggest Loser" is fast becoming an indoor ornament gathering dust.
The yoga DVD I bought looks more like something I play to perve on the curvy instructor in my recliner over a bag of crisps.
Short of dusting off motivational music tapes like "Eye of the Tiger", what can I do to ignite myself into action??? I need a bomb under me. Help!!!

i read in an inflight mag that the best ways to get motivated are:
1) try something different - eg. circuit training
2) get a personal trainer
3) drag a friend along to exercise with you.
...that's all i got for now...but then again i DO work at a sports centre...

ok dont laugh..but i bought a wii fit. and so far ive lost 6 kilos! for me its the perfect combo of video game and exercise.. i pretty much hate excercise but this is definitely working for me.
i guess its all about finding something that actually interests you, otherwise u dont keep it up no matter what results ur getting. what about dancing lessons?

My girlfriend just bought a wii fit and you cant get her off it! She isnt keen on exercise but she just loves this!
Its true, find something you enjoy doing and youre more likely to stick with it.
Or do small exercises in small doses e.g. a ten minute walk 3 times a day.
(I like cycling, but unfortunately my ride usually ends up at cafe somewhere having a slap up brunch...oh well..!)

I have a personal trainer and she is fantastic; however, If you can't afford a personal trainer then try not eating, it's always worked for me. I might be 46 but I weigh as much as a 12 year old; you can never be too thin or too rich ;)

great motivator, strip off and go into the room of mirrors for a long hard look at yourself, like what you see???
Or another confirmed sighting of Migaloo in your bathroom, worked a treat for me, oh and the doctor telling me I will die soon. Doc suggested a book on Low GI eating (not a diet) and I dusted off the shoes and started walking. That was 6yrs ago and 35k heavier.
As tired as I am after work some days I still drag my sorry ass out the door for an 8k fast walk, it clears my brain and I feel energised when I get back. My work takes me to very remote spots and I still walk, if theres a dirt road or an airstrip Im on it. Just gotta watch out for wild pigs and buffalo!!
