View Full Version : The Republic Question

Should Australia become a Republic? Mr Kevin Rudd is a supporter of this and has even said that "it's not off the table" either in his term in government. The new Liberal leader Malcolm Turnbull was a stern supporter of becoming a Republic first time round. Do you think that if there was a vote to become a Republic it would succeed?

With the possibility of bipartisan support from the major political parties you would have to say it is more likely than it has been. The vagaries of politics and the referendum that would be required do, however, have to be considered. I have no doubt that there would be political pressure groups that would put the heat on Rudd and Turnbull by offering their support for a republic conditional on other things. Maybe one of those things might be continuing opposition or obfuscation on full recognition of same sex relationships.

Yes.....
My view of this topic has changed back and fourth over the years.
Now - I think Australia becoming a republic and electing our head of government (people nominated, parliamentary appointed) is the right way to go socially. However I don’t know if it would pass a referendum today…
Furthermore I don’t think ‘royal families’ have their place as heads of state….

I really don't like the idea of Australia being a republic... I'm mean, look at US...
That's my opinion anyway...

I think there are a myriad of other reasons for US to be the way they are...not sure being a republic is the reason.
One reason I like the idea of a republic is cos I think people shouldn't inherit wealth and power derived from centuries of brutality and oppression going back to the days of feudalism. Not even if the feudalistic propaganda of romanticism, identity and glory are still alive and believed by some people....I just don't buy it.
At least the pope is elected...somewhat...kind of...?

I like being a monarchy. I'm a big fan of Pomp and Circumstance.
The other option is to have our own monarch of course. Maybe transplant one of Princess Mary's kids?

Or we can elect an Aussie for a similar role...I've met you twice...I'll vote for you! ;)

You mean we could have an elected monarchy like in Star Wars? I suppose that could work! ;)
I do have a regal stature, that is true. ;)
