ooooooohhhh controverisal doco on the ABC tonight. I was 1000% behind Al Gore and his "Inconveninet Truth" but The Great Global Warming Swindle was so damn convincing my head has been swimming the past few hours.
Who to believe? I don't know anymore! The Swindle has the co-founder of Greenpeace on their side for christssake.
If you missed it, the Swindle essentially said that the rising temps etc have nothing to do with man-made cardon dioxide emissions or anything else that we do, it's out of our hands and go to do with the sun and we can't do anything about it. My head! My spinning head!

a very interesting documentary and a very heated panel debate followed afterwards. Historically Durkin's data is totally accurate and the IPCC has been highly criticized in recent times for creating the "hockey stick" model. Durkin didn't do himself to many favors by leaving the last 15 years off the data graphs - BUT he does raise the important question of "Does funding grants and the availability of money lead to the distortion of scientific data/research to meet the grant requirements"?
Durkin's credibility was always in doubt given the scientific flaws in his previous documentary attempts and for those that watched - putting aside Tony Jones' aggressive one sided questioning of the "flaws" - Durkin's previous documentary attempts have left his credibility lagging.... especially competing against an iconic figure like Al Gore presenting the other side of the case.
The IPCC needs to reassess the way it analyzes scientific data and produce a truly independant set of data - however as the IPCC is fully funded by governments and corporations - i fear we will never see this happen.
All said - I think the highlight came from the panel - We are past the scientific assessment time.. we know this is happening - It is now about managing the risk to people, population, business, environment and lifestyle.

I watched it last night too, and was "almost" convinced for a while during the documentary. But the ABC were great in the way they took it apart as soon as it was over.
I thought that Durkin came across as really slimy and uber cocky in his interview, convenienetly making the graphs work for the documentary.
It was nice to hear an alternative view and I'm certainly open to it, but it hasn't changed my thinking.

I saw this article on the BBC website this week which seems to discredit the documentary from looking at the most recent data from the sun.
I didn't see the documentary (was watching the very high brow Showgirls instead!!!! - last chance ice anyone?) but I saw lateline where they were interviewing one of the scientists who Durkin used in his documentary. He was complaining that his views were completely misrepresented by Durkin and that he was never told of the purpose of the documentary.
