Coming to terms with one’s identity/sexuality is as diverse as the physical characteristics we have acquired through genetics; personality traits we’ve acquired from friends, family or other. This short video exposes real gay men and women saying everything they need to say about how they feel about their sexuality using three small words: ‘I AM GAY’.
Each person will be edited into a cohesive narrative that begins with negative or hateful expressions. In other words, the person hates being gay, thinks it is a hindrance, etc. And the piece will finish with a flamboyant declaration of sexuality acceptance, liberal and in line with the themes behind the Mardi Gras festival. Think of it as a scale of 1 to 10 or self-acceptance.
The final video will be submitted to this years QueerScreen Festival.
BRIEF:
Volunteers will record and submit their own video. Please pronounce the words ‘I AM GAY’ in a way that expresses how you feel about yourself being gay. Make sure you compose your shot, so you are centred and showing only head and shoulders. Eye contact depends on whether you feel inhibited or extrovert about your sexuality. If you need to say more, keep it simple… for example ‘AND I LOVE/HATE IT’, etc.
Please record 5 seconds before and after you speak so I have some room to edit. Videos can be shot in the privacy of your own home (using your own video camera, or webcam) or wherever but please try and keep your background and angle neutral, and clear of off-camera noises.
The idea is to be as clear as possible and minimal. I’d prefer you wear little or no clothing and accessories, as the video is more about an emotional response, vulnerable and exposed. Of course, if you don’t feel comfortable I am unlikely to reject your submission.
Please email the finished highest resolution video to (cain9ine@yahoo.com.au) in AVI, MPG, MOV formats only (max 10MB, 30sec-1min duration).
Thanks,
Cain
