The 2006 Census results (http://www.censusdata.abs.gov.au/ABSNavigation/prenav/PopularAreas?&collection=Census&period=2006&&navmapdisplayed=true&textversion=false) have recently been published... I went looking through them (out of curiosity) to see if they had any statistics at all on the GLBT (plus whatever other capitals are added these days) population in Australia.
Strangely (or not so), there was very little mention of anything about this - all I could find is "Relationships in Households" - which covered straight and same-sex couples.

There are a few things that provoked thought for me here:
(1) What percentage of Australians identify themselves as gay these days?
I know that figures are regularly quoted anywhere between 5-50%, but is there actually any reliable data?

(2) How do you think people (including the general public) would react to marking the 'gay, lesbian, straight, other' on a census form in the future?

(3) How would you feel about having your name officially linked to your sexuality if (2) became a reality? Do you think there is a still a certain degree of resentment to the explicit identification of the gay minority?

Interested to hear your thoughts.

Theoretically it shouldn't matter.

Ultimately, you would hope that there is no resentment to the explicit identification of the gay minority. But that won't necessarily comfort people.

When my partner and i filled in the census we filled it in as living together as a couple. Presumably we got counted the same as any any straight couple. I'd definitely be curious to know the percentage of gay vs straight couples living together (which they should be able to get from the current results), as well as the percentage of people identifying as gay, but somehow i doubt the real statistics would come out, given the amount of people who stay eternally closeted.

I agree with alison ... I think even though its private some people would still find it daunting to actually label it on something official.

yeah. i agree. saying it on an official document is a bit daunting.

I'd tick it, but agree that not everyone would.

someone would prob assume that it was against civil liberties and moan that we should then be treated as any straight couple and that it's wrong to collect information on the sexuality of couples....possibly

don't they include this question on the census form in other countries?
if only we could trust the government to actually use this data for good.

My small way of standing up and being counted is to put 'Married' on all official documentation and forms - census and otherwise and then list my partner's name next to it... if it asks for next of Kin, i list him and next to 'Relationship', i put Husband.

While they don't recognise us legally, i take the opportunity to put it in their faces whenever I get a chance... maybe one day we'll actually be recognised.

Which leads me to my next thread...
