Can't wait to see this place once it has opened!

for those of you who have not heard, check out the website. http://www.cloudland.tv/#

here's some blurb, pics and videos

"Clouds will exist at Cloudland! The sky is literally the limit for Brisbane’s most exciting new venue, Cloudland in the Valley, which has a retractable glass ceiling. However, the unique roof will not be the only reason why the Ann Street experience will be like no other.

Patrons will be visually stunned by 5000 plants climbing and sprawling over a 14 metre interior wall, a solid marble bar and the use of 17000 glass balls to create a bar.

If that’s not enough for jaws to start dropping, then the glass retractable roof will, whilst also being the main talking point when the venue opens in December. Taking advantage of the perfect Queensland climate, this venue is sure to be the envy of interstate and international visitors.

The roof‘s main purpose is to keep the rain out as the sun will beam directly into the heart of the four floor venue everyday and taking only two minutes to open, the roof can create a unique outdoor or indoor experience with the flick of a switch.

Menus for events at Cloudland are designed by executive chef Michael Muir. Catering for cocktail style soirees from 50 to 1500 guests and sit- down for 50-250, the menus offer modern cuisine to complement Cloudland’s extraordinary contemporary design."

open date is now apparently feb. check out the glass ball bar and wall garden videos below!

I'm really keen to get inside and check it out... I hope it lives up to the expectations!

Worked had booked it for a x-mas party back in November last year... it would have been a fantastic party if it had been open in time.

Yeah I'm keen to check it out! I was meant to go to a Christmas party there as well. And it wasn't my Christmas party, so could've made a real fool of myself!

If it ever actually opens up I'll come along to a samesame meet up... might as well gay the place up from the beginning! :)

Did anyone go? I heard it's first night open to the public (Friday) was pretty crap! Well thats what a couple of semi-bogan friends of mine said after a stint there friday night... The promises of a more up-market club do not seem to have transpired...

I tried to get in on Saturday night with my date and we were really dressed up and everything..but we were turned away for 'not dressed for the venue'...though girls ahead of us were getting in with tiny slutty dresses etc.. Plus some guys in hoodies got in..

I work as a door guard in the valley and I've worked at Empire, Bank, Family etc so I know when I'm being fucked around, and we definitely were on this occasion.

I know they won't be getting my business! I won't even try to go again.

This is surprising... I caught up with friends after they'd left cloudlands on Friday night... they were not dressed up! They were surprised that there was no line and that they actually got in!

hazyinseptember

sounds like there is no chance of me getting in... lol :D

We also tried to go on Friday night and refused entry because of what we were wearing which was quite strange as the ones that got in before us were similarly dressed to us. It's a venue owned by the Bickle family. Enough said. They have very inconsistant and unco-ordinated dress regulations at all their venues which are Family, The Empire and Birdie Num Nums. If they continue this way with their door regulations their is no way they will ever recoup the money it cost to build the place.

I saw it lit up from the outside for the first time on Sunday night... it just reminds me of a ride at side show alley during ekka.

I still want to try and get in for a sticky beak.

The same security company also work at the gabba and have told me that they are keeping the age up. If you look under 25 you pretty much have no chance. Good idea in theory and i can agree with it as some of the 18-22 can be nightmares out and dont purchase a lot (i am generalising, there are exceptions).

you just sound annoyed you didn't get let in. lighten up, have a change of clothes ready and try again. it's always that way with guys. next time go with a few girls and i'm sure you won't have a problem. :D

We did go with several girls. There were 6 of us in the group. Three girls and three guys. All of us between 30 and 40. We comprised of 1 gay couple, one lesbian couple and a straight couple. The main reason I think we were stopped was the lesbian couple were holding hands but the excuse given was that we were inappropriately dressed which was strange considering the ones in front of us were similarly dressed. So yes I was annoyed and have since heard of similar situations occurring with gay and lesbian people. We have gone to the other up market bar called Zuri and have had no problem. In fact that was were we ended up going the night Cloudland knocked us back and had no problem at all getting in and noticed that there were other gays and lesbians in this venue of our age bracket so this is the venue we will focus on instead of a pretentious Bickle family venue that only wants the pink dollar when it suits them.

Finally went here on Saturday Night! I was not a fan! For all of it's decoration and attempts to be stylish it just comes off as sterile to me. Sort of reminded me of Star City Casino in Sydney. The Melbournite with us seemed to like it though! It was like a Bowls club on steriods, I was half expecting see a bank of Pokies and the silver haired set putting there pensions to good use.

I think glitz on a large scale only works in certain places... Brisbane does small "boutique" venues, pubs and dingy clubs really well... it should stick to that formula!

I rocked up on a Thursday night, and was a bit "meh" with it all.

I think its over decorated... and it will look trashy (or trashier) in about 6 months time.

Great cocktails (but there are many venues that have great cocktails theses days).

A nice place to start the evening off.

The Sky Room is my new favourite cocktail destination. You always see some local newsreader/weather girl in there... Brisbane celebrities HUH!

No chance in hell of me ever making it past the front door. I don't think I own a collared shirt :P

andrewc
30th June 2009, 10:08 AM
I was wearing a t-shirt, collarless jumper and sunglasses on my head (yes I had been out drinking all day). They just asked me to remove the sunglasses from my head.

Honestly there are better places to go that are just as expensive, just as pretentious and easier to get into! Sky Room, Siana, Jade Buddha, Cru Bar, Watt Bar.

where is jade buddah?

andrewc
30th June 2009, 04:54 PM
Eagle st Pier! Its where City Rower's used to be... It still smells the same... but the after-five crowd seem to love it! The food is actually not too bad either.

I miss Rower's, that place was great. Should check out the jade buddah if its even half similar

Its nothing like it anymore... it is more of a restaurant now... even upstairs (called the Lotus Lounge I think) is compltetely different... but yeah the smell of beer and cigs firmly stamped into the carpet still remains.

The outdoor verandah has great views... I don't recall ever going outside when it was Rowers!

Ok so the food at Cloudland was pretty good and nowhere near as expensive as I expected... but the staff are shit. The table service (yes we had booked ahead) was so fricking slow.... and it takes forever to get a cocktail. And has anyone ever actually managed to get the foam ontop of the one that's supposed to have foam? my friend has ordered it on 4 different occasions and they never have the foam

I'm actually not much of a clubber... but I have to say Cloudland is pretty stunning! Best of all there is loads of room (I hate crowds) and many of the couches and seating are arranged so they are almost like beds, really comfortable and decadent ha! I would describe the decor as '70's disaster-movie chic' - like an aura of extreme opulence that at any moment is going to be devastated by a lurching wall of water or firy explosion. Sort of like The Towering Inferno crossed with The Poseidon Adventure ('72 version of course).

The only disappointment for me was the fact that 90% of the crowd appeared to be the same old BOOOOORING Brisso dullards that seem to be crawling all over the Valley these days.... close descendents of the same species that infested Fridays and various CBD hangouts in the early 90's. Different decade, same outfits!

This was typified perfectly to me at one point during my first visit - three blokes with their chambre shirts and blue jeans with beers standing in front of the amazing upstairs bar glass ball sculpture - they looked slightly bemused themselves by the surroundings (they were beamed in directly from the RG I think) but so comically out of place - just said it all really.

OK, call me a social snob....

Well go on!!

24th July 2009, 10:37 PM
dunno what was going on tonight but at 5:30 tonight there was a cue down the street and around the corner to get in..

mudley
24th July 2009, 10:47 PM
Yeah there is always a bloody queue and then you get in and it's a quarter bloody full! So the queue is free advertising I guess. If I was picking and choosing on the door it would be the best club in Brisbane - no BORING people in HIDEOUS clothing!!! Easy! HA!

Hi I'm heading up to Brissy next weekend, I'm from sydney but have been to the Valley once before, I believe I went to "The Beat"? Is Cloudland anything like the beat?
My friend is taking me there and she told me to dress up, but have no idea what to wear. How should I dress to get in?

hazyinseptember
7th October 2010, 11:28 AM
nothing like the beat!

definitely dress up, they have a very strict door policy. Its also not a gay venue.

saying that i have never been because they never let me in!

andrewc
7th October 2010, 11:32 AM
I think for girls as long as you are not wearing distressed denim or street shoes, you should be fine. They are generally more strict on the guys!

mudley
7th October 2010, 11:37 AM
Hey Livy, yeah you do need to dress up a bit, as I said it's fun inside but the crowd is a bit dull. I don't know what you are into, but Ric's on the mall is fun and quite indie and mixed crowd too. Also recommended is Glass Bar, next to Judith Wright Centre, Bowery Bar (on Ann Street) and La Rouge (next to Bowery). Have fun!

couldland is a bit more chilled than other clubs... if you want more upbeat music where you're likely to get it, head to family around the corner

It makes me feel all the acid I ate in the 80/90's has decided to flashback ALL at the same time.
