If a thread has no imidiate apparent point or outcome what is the point of it? Sometimes the point is entertainment or to simply stimulate discusion. Viewed alone this is a pointless thread however if it is allowed to fill out this may be a justifiable thread. My point is if a harmless thread is judged when it is just put up it may just appear to be pointless & if the argument is to stay on topic read some of the threads out there & you will see a a newby I have no idea of where they go because they end with one person I dont know inviting another person I dont know out for coffee. So if you dont like a thread DONT READ IT.

'Nothing will come of nothing'
King Lear, William Shakespeare
Cordelia states that she loves her father no more than that of her sisters, Goneril & Regan. Offended, King Lear, states to Cordelia that her declaration of love will yield her 'nothing'. King Lear rendered her statement of love as 'pointless' - but the point of Cordelia's statement was not to 'overwhelm' her father with 'falseness' or insincerity....
'A show about nothing'.
Jerry Seinfeld
Proving that 'nothing' does indeed have a 'point'.

yes and I think a few months ago I posted a "thread about nothing" which is a consistently humorous trait of mine to try and create something from nothing. I love how a thread can just take on a life of its own with minimum input by the author.

consider the DaDa movement.
Dada or Dadaism is a cultural movement that began in Zürich, Switzerland, during World War I and peaked from 1916 to 1922.[1] The movement primarily involved visual arts, literature—poetry, art manifestoes, art theory—theatre, and graphic design, and concentrated its anti war politics through a rejection of the prevailing standards in art through anti-art cultural works.
Dada activities included public gatherings, demonstrations, and publication of art/literary journals; passionate coverage of art, politics, and culture were topics often discussed in a variety of media. The movement influenced later styles like the avant-garde and downtown music movements, and groups including surrealism, Nouveau Réalisme, pop art, Fluxus and punk rock.
Dada is the groundwork to abstract art and sound poetry, a starting point for performance art, a prelude to postmodernism, an influence on pop art, a celebration of antiart to be later embraced for anarcho-political uses in the 1960s and the movement that lay the foundation for Surrealism.

I agree. It doesnt take any effort NOT to read a thread, and everyone would be happier, well, at least not arguing.. maybe.

Yes. A fruitful discussion. A thread devoted to the 'pointless' actually is an exercise in creative expression. One could argue that the 'Word Game' thread is pointless because it encompasses the random word association that comes along with immediate flashes of spontaneous insight (ie *pointless*). And yet the Word Game thread IS THE MOST POPULAR and HEAVILY TRAFFICKED THREAD ON SAME SAME!
Even immediate flashes of spontaneous insight are 'fruitful'.

*Nothing/low content*? Well, it's all about individual interest. Christian posts an article about how Kylie's new South American boyfriend is 'gay' ('She sure can pick 'em') just because he accepts a modelling pay cheque from OUT magazine. An article about NOTHING. That thread died after 2 days or so, lack of substance...
Meanwhile we have threads about incidental (what you'd call *nothing/low content*) stuff that last for over a week...and the content that surfaces out of these threads end up more meaningful that the *interesting* ones....
Another thing. Calling loyal posters 'post whores' really goes to heart of how you moderate. If all the 'post whores' were to go elsewhere, your role would be redundant.

You're assuming that everyone that reads news/reviews/features on the Same Same website posts in the thread that's created from commenting on the story, when it's not usually the case.
Just because the thread on that particular news story didn't get many replies on the forum, it doesn't mean the story itself did badly.
Even if a story doesn't take off, at the very least it makes it look as if the website is being constantly updated.

We work hard to bring people up to date with news stories regardless on if people comment on them. Hopefully we can bring more and more news, events, reviews as the site continues to grow.. Remember much of the work done at samesame is by contributors. The site is much much more than forums...
unless you sit here every day clicking refresh in the forums every 3 seconds, then I suggest your life is full of nothingness and it's time to re evaluate

Too much of nothing
Can make a man feel ill at ease
One man's temper might rise
While another man's temper might freeze
In the middle of confession
We cannot mock a soul
Oh, when there's too much of nothing
No one has control.
When there's too much of nothing
It can cause a man to weep
He can walk the streets and boast like the most
but he dont now a thing.
It's all been done before
It's all been written in the book
Andwhen there's too much of nothing
Nobody should look.
And too much of nothing can make a man a liar
It can cause one man to sleep on nails
It can cause others to eat fire
Everybody's doin' somethin'
I heard it in a dream
But when there's too much of nothing
It just makes a fella mean.
