I took a while to think about this post, but I think I can finally articulate it ina way I see fit and how it doesn't offend. I think I am quite over living in Australia after living here allmy life and have travelling to all corners of it and I believe that there are so many positive things about it, the beaches, the laid-back attitude, multiculturalism there are also many ugly things about it, especiall from my perspective of living in the suburbs which seems quite remote from the city and more open minded-ness but I also feel that violence and standover tactics and domination is/are taking over the mentality as a country but I am also quite dissatisfied how hard it is to be appreciated as an artist/creative person in Australian society. Although I would miss it terribly, I will come to the conclusion that if John Howard is re-elected later this year, I will consider leaving Australia for an extended amount of time as a social and a career choice.
Has anybody else considered this under similar circumstances?

he WILL NOT be re-elected... where would you go Jackie?
I think you'll find the standover tactics and domination mentality are prevalent in most developed countries that have a republican style government parties.. .
By all means travel though.. you'll soon realise there is no place like Australia.

Explain Jackie.. I know many in Oz that are certainly rewarded for their creative contributions..

I can understand your feelings as I too did consider leaving australia because of John Howard refuses to give Gay community a fair go.
However, I realised if I leave Australia it would be like letting Howard win without a fight. So I decided not to give him the satifiastion of that and instead i will stay on and fight against him and win the battle. It is TIME Howard realise that times have changed and it's TIME Australia need to move on and allow the gay people to have the same rights as hetrosexuals.
Although i have a feeling Howard will lose the election this year.

Heck I've wanted to leave australia since year 10 ... I've never travelled overseas :( so i really want to go. I would love to go somewhere cold ... I am SOOOO over summer it already feels like we're in the middle of it and we're only at the end of winter. I too hate howard ... and feel the stupid religious groups will help him and family first gain control over politics. God I miss seperation of the church and state. Hmm maybe canda ... it sounds nice. Good weather, good health care, good rights.

Oh Jesus Christ don't take it so seriously. Get a job. Sure, i can't marry my partner in Australia, big whoop. I can still listen to the music i want, read what i want, work in whatever job i want, wear whatever clothes i want, go study whatever i want, hang out with mates any time of day or night... This isn't even close to an oppressive government. Imagine what it's like to be gay in Jamaica or Zimbabwe or Saudi Arabia!
If you want to travel because you want to travel then by all means, go have fun! Lots of people travel to open their minds and experience different cultures and see amazing sights. But don't travel to try escape some imaginary persecution - you're just going to carry your insecurities with you and be just as depressed wherever you end up. If you honestly feel so persecuted right now that you feel like you need to leave the country i seriously recommend visiting a therapist and fixing your own problems before tackling the world.
