not only are there two articles in this weeks SSO regarding Same Sex Marriage - The Rudd Government will never say Yes... and Relationship Register Squashed... but now the SMH is printing the drivel as well...
http://www.smh.com.au/news/opinion/all-relationships-are-not-equal-for-good-reason/2007/08/15/1186857591571.html
Perhaps the Rally last weekend hit a few nerves?? Fuck em. Let's keep pushing until we get equal rights for our relationships as anyone else in this country!

Wow, what a crap piece of writing.
Trying to compare the need for equality in civil unions and the the other 58 pieces of discriminatory legislation to letting a 16 year-old drive a car is just outright stupid.
I'd hesitate to guess the age of this writer, and must admit that after the first sentence and mention of "so-called entitlements" I raced straight to the bottom and read the end-line: "Chris Meney is director of the Marriage and Family Office for the Catholic Archdiocese of Sydney."
Very typical. Sadly.

yes, when I got to the bottom and saw tho wrote it I was not surprised at all... but that bottom line says it all really...
"In short, we need to support, by law and social policy, heterosexual monogamous marriage."
At least the Article heading calls it exactly what it is - an anti gay piece... "for good reason..."??? How fucking arrogant and condescending....

Ah, just re-reading it is making me angry.
The way he describes the need to "support a civic institution that encourages authentic and enduring unions" (read between the lines: gay relationships are not authentic or enduring)
And the whole slippery slope argument of gay civil unions will eventually lead to polygamous marriages and/or beastilty marraiges (I'm truly surprised he didn't bring this one up, most homophobic Catholics do) is often used, but is probably the weakest link thrown into the argument.
This is the perfect example of the church trying to use fear to try to stop progressive moment (fancy that? the Church using fear as a de-motivator! And I thought Hell was real....)
If there were any line of truth to this argument, then wouldn't we have expected the many countries around the world that have legalised same-sex unions to have already slid into farmers marrying their pigs, and dads their daughters? Unfortunately for the author, the research shows that the opposite is happening in those countries - the dying instituion of marraige is being resurrected across the board.
It's a real shame when people like this use fear of "image what could potentially happen" to drag issues like incest into the picture merely to distract from the issue at hand.

I just did a Google on Chris Meney and found out he's one of Pell's altar boys (using a flattering term)

Is is any surprise to learn that he has 8 children (and this was 5 years ago, so maybe he has even more now)
Hasn't he ever heard of contraception? Oh wait, damn, I forgot, sorry....

Ugh, I hate Catholics. Even I was once and my mum's family is all Catholic they shit me to tears and now I'm gonna be accused of being a racist.
I live right next to the football ovals of a Catholic boys college and the rugby mums always fling the doors of their Toyota Monstrosities without looking and choke up the traffic on Saturday mornings, ugh sometimes I wish they used a knitting needle.

okay so i don't generally weigh into the gay marraige debate......I am happy with what i have but it would be nice to tidy up the finances with some sort of recognised document......
But I just read that articleand all i can say - what a cock!......he basically says if you do not form part of a hetro couple you offer society nothing.....no of course we don't - of course the hundred odd thousand dollars we (as a couple) pay in tax does nothing for society or the fact my bf will run to the aid of anyone that looks like they need help so much so i call him the serial pest!.......sorry but what i fwit......its the church and these god botherers that really shit me and offer out dated views and nothing to society......they live in their happy homes with their heads so far intreched up their asses they have no idea about what is really going on in the world.....
These tools need to relise that society extends beyond the church walls......
In the words of scrappy doo "let me at em!"

yes, this guy obviously has no idea about gay relationships - likening them to flatmates, or siblings. yeah, right.
i do think he has a point about the value of the family and how it's the foundation of society - but i do think there are ways that the gay community can have their rights without eroding the family.
i wish the gay community would stop asking for gay marriage tho - can we just have civil unions and leave the marriage thing alone?

but TD they're not even ageeing to give us that! Whether it's marriage, civil unions, domestic partnerships or whatever - it's that our relationships are getting no acknowledgement that shits me to tears

No, seriously, he has no fucking idea, I bet his wife and kids are happy with black eyes if they disagree with him and he can root his wife's loose old love bucket without even asking whenver he feels like adding another one of his miserable children into the world

I love how in his absurd logic it's perfectly ok for a serial killing incestuous pedophile to marry a hooker he meets online, but it's not ok for two guys who are in love and want to have a civil union. It makes perfect sense...

"who can provide appropriate gender role-modelling"
OH! really now which really means forcing women back to their subservient role! This guy has no fucking clue! GAH! Gay relationships are not like friendships or sibling rleationships, what the fuck is he going on about....and mind you, an altar boy of Pell's. WE ALL KNOW WHAT WENT ON THERE!!!! I know this is just a hypothesis, religion today maybe overtly fundamentalist and rigid today...this is the very reason why we have to look out for them. Religion has always had friends in higher places (pun is not intended) and even little Johnny gets all "Jesus-Loves-me" on the whole same-sex marriage debate. Just as I said on the Westboro Church article, is that what mainstream religion is really all about these days: hate, ignorance, intolerance and inequality?
I'm fed up with religion as a whole and no wonder the rise of secularism, atheism and agnosticism is increasing today. Just look at the record of Church attendances...its so close to Hell = zero/poor attendance!
Damn me, that fuckwit can go back to SWALLOWING every word from Pell's cock!

I find it very interesting that they haven't left any space for public opinion or comment, that and there is no article on pro-Same Sex (marriage/unions).
Its all a very one-sided biased piece which tells me that this is issue is definatley pushing buttons.
I think with everything that is going on at the moment this is the Churches little way of lashing out. You have to face it the news is filling up more and more with things to do with the GLBT community.
The National Day of Action, 60 minutes last night... hell every 2nd news article nowadays is to do with someone who is GLBT
I'm with Cheetah lets keep pushing....they can't hold out forever... plus even if they try... we are all alot younger then they are...

Exactly - the younger generation will be the ones in power sooner or later and the traditionalist bigots will be gone - it's only a matter of time but we should continue to do everything we can to make sure they know we're not going to go away!

Hmmm, I don't know about that...I know a lot of older people who are supportive of gay rights whilst there are heaps of young bogans who brag about bashing gays, etc. There is plenty of homophobia in the younger generations these days

People become a couple for a variety of reasons but one of the major reasons is love. Love is not the sole preserve of heterosexual couples.
We live in a country made up of couples, singles and families. Each contribute to raising children in different ways and some are married and some are not, some are gay and some are straight.
It doesn't matter who you love,
Or how you love
It only matters that you love.
