Hi guys
Just seen in the metro that Rufus Wainwright is coming out early next year for a concert at the state theatre. Tickets go on sale August 27th. Will definitely be getting tickets to this.

Now if only someone would remind Mika that he needs to get his arse here very soon I will be very happy.

OMG I love love love Rufus.

I'm so there. x

Has he been out to sydney before?

State Theatre is a great venue for him too!

Tim D

Yep a few times. He toured with the Leonard Cohen tribute a few years back along with his mum and aunt, and in 2004 he played at the Sydney Opera House.

He also performed at the Sound Lounge at the Seymour Centre when David Hawkins (Producer of Hedwig) was running it as a cabaret room - amazing show in such a small room! He came for a drink across the road at the Rose.
State Theatre won't be quite as intimate, but still great...

He also played the Basement in the CBD on the same tour ( I vaguely recall) as he playedthe seymour centre with his family. Tim D don't forget to coordinate a like minded group of us so we can all go together.

I got my tickets this morning!

All of the Stalls were gone except the back row, just we got fifth row in the Dress Circle.

Who else is coming?

Funking Trance
27th August 2007, 11:39 AM
yeah got my tickets too.
I couldn't believe the stalls sold out so quickly. That is just bullshit. I went on at 9.01 and the only seats available in the stalls were row T so we ended up getting 3rd row of the dress circle.

Do they put aside all the tickets in the front of the stalls for guests or do you reckon it was scalpers? Its surprising scalpers were targeting rufus wainwright. God I hate them.

Anyhow sorry whinge over now and yes very excited about seeing him. Just wish it wasn't so long to wait.

It took a bit of effort, but I'll be there...

The Gay Messiah is coming :-)

As expected, now there's a 2nd Rufus concert. I'm seriously considering going to both...

Funking Trance
4th September 2007, 10:00 AM
yeah I'm going to see if I can get better tickets to the 2nd night. Would love to be up the front.

Tim D
4th September 2007, 10:02 AM
What seats did you get for the Tues night?

The first time I logged in I got back row of the stalls, then I got 5th row of the Dress Circle, which is way better.

Funking Trance
4th September 2007, 10:09 AM
3rd row of the dress circle, yeah all the stalls were gone in the first few minutes.

They are not bad but would love to be downstairs at the front for this concert.

Tim D
4th September 2007, 10:21 AM
Yeah I think all the stalls went to the fan club pre-sales (which I always seem to find out about AFTER the event).

Funking Trance
4th September 2007, 10:25 AM
Ah that explains it then - I thought it was a bit strange that scalpers were targeting this event.

Tim D
4th September 2007, 10:26 AM
PS. Heard that Mika is coming back in March. Did you catch him at the Forum?

Funking Trance
4th September 2007, 11:25 AM
Yikes!!! No I didn't - I was overseas for that one so missed it.

Thats great news and around Mardi Gras time too! Very excited.

Thanks. I think it must of only just gone up as I kept searching this morning.

Did you get tickets for this one too?

I'm going to just go the first night now. The seats available aren't that much better and I think I am going to need all my money for other things early next year.

Tim D
28th December 2007, 12:06 PM
Counting down the days to this one now.

Anyone else got Rufus Rufus Rufus - Rufus Does Judy @ Carnegie Hall. It is quite possibly the gayest thing I've ever heard in my life and I love it.

Funking Trance
28th December 2007, 12:28 PM
Not got that but will see if I can find it tonight. Is it a live cd or a free download?

Tim D
28th December 2007, 12:32 PM
It's a live double CD - out now at all good record stores. Lol.

CeeJay
29th December 2007, 09:41 AM
Yeah there was a rumour he was going to do the Judy show as well in Oz... obviously didn't happen *sigh*. But you're right, it doesn't get much gayer than that...

Funking Trance

Downloaded it on the weekend and loved it. Perfect music to clean to I think you will find.

I wonder if he will do any of the songs at his gigs in January? That would be lots of fun.

Have you heard his version of Hallelujah too? That is amazing. He has the pefect voice for it and I believe he sings that live quite a lot.

Tim D
31st December 2007, 11:07 AM
Yeah I reckon he will do a song or two from in next month. Should be hot. I hope he does "You Go To My Head" or "Over the Rainbow", both awesome tracks. I'll have to test out the cleaning music idea ha!

Yes Hallelujah is one of my fave Rufus tracks. He shits all over any Jeff Buckley or even the original with his version.

So how good was last night?!

My Highlights: the simple and moving Art Teacher, the two songs from Judy Judy Judy, 14th Street, Between My Legs with that spoken word chick (and her dancing!), Not Ready To Love....oh I could continue.

Loved it, even after the tiredness of a big weekend!

Funking Trance
30th January 2008, 10:19 AM
Loved it loved it loved it.

The harmonies created by the band were just amazing. Such textured sounds in all of his songs. His voice amazing. Do I disappoint you sounded like some choral masterpiece.

Yeah good on that girl for doing that. I saw the competition over the weekend but no way could I have done that. She was cool.

The transformation for the last two songs - fun fun fun.

Just bought his back catalogue on amazon.

I've been so spoilt this last week with bjork and now rufus.

PS. Who ever knew that Leaving For Paris was written for Nicole Kidman in Moulin Rouge?!

Funking Trance
30th January 2008, 11:38 AM
Yeah. I can understand why it wasn't used though in Moulin Rouge. Just wouldn't have fitted in with all the rest of the songs.

Also I thought the guy speaking at the end of 'Between My Legs' on the cd was Neil Tennant? He mentioned a different name when he introduced it.

jasn
30th January 2008, 11:49 AM
Doesn't sound like Neil. Not to me, at least.

Fab song!

Tim D
30th January 2008, 11:53 AM
Nah it's an actress called Sian Phillips.

http://www.ticketmaster.com.au/artist/779510

She was in I, Claudius. I remember watching that at school.

Can you imagine Nicole Kidman butchering Leaving For Paris?

Funking Trance
30th January 2008, 12:00 PM
There's me thinking that was Neil Tennant for the last year. I thought he had a writing credit on that song which is prob why I assumed it was him.

Looking forward to all the cd's arriving. I bought the rufus does judy live dvd in London too. Hadn't realised they had filmed that one.

I was waiting for the SMH's review to see what they thought:

http://www.smh.com.au/news/music/get-happy-they-were-in-raptures-over-this-finale/2008/01/30/1201369221742.html

Funking Trance
31st January 2008, 11:29 AM
Cool review. Anyone go last night?

Tim D
31st January 2008, 02:15 PM
I love that fact that I now view Release the Stars in a different light. All of a sudden "I'm Not Ready To Love" makes complete sense, as does "Leaving For Paris". I never quite "got" them until after the concert, now they are my new faves!

Funking Trance
31st January 2008, 02:21 PM
I often find that with live gigs. It really gets you listening to songs on the album that previously you weren't as in to and really brings the album back to life again for you. In my case its got me wanting to hear all his other albums now.

Apparently Barry Humphries was at the Tuesday gig. He went from his sick bed as he could not miss it.

Tim D
31st January 2008, 02:23 PM
I want to get more live recordings and DVDs. Can you let me know when you get yours in what is worth getting?

Funking Trance
31st January 2008, 02:36 PM
Yeah will do.
Should hopefully arrive next week from the UK.

I saw a couple of live rufus gigs (audio) on Torrent sites when I searched the other day - from his UK tour I think. Virgin on george st have also got the London Judy gig on dvd I just noticed although its more expensive than amazon.

CeeJay
31st January 2008, 03:38 PM
I got the Judy DVD at JB in Bondi J for around $20 during the sales.

There's also a cheap doco DVD that (I think) includes some live performances.

BTW - after watching the DVD, you may be interested in booking for Lorna Luft singing her mother's songs at the Factory Theatre on Mardi Gras eve :-)
